nLIGHT: 3 Key Takeaways for Long-Term Investors

November 8, 2026 · by TPW Pipeline

On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Nov. 5, 2026, nLIGHT (LASR +29.58%) reported top-line growth driven by military program execution despite optical supply bottlenecks. Long-term investors must weigh how effectively the laser manufacturer transitions from component vendor to prime defense contractor while navigating global supply chain shifts. Three takeaways from the call stand out.

1. Directed Energy Wins Elevate nLIGHT to System Integrator

Management secured a $627 million Joint Laser Weapon System (JLWS) agreement, marking a shift from supplying individual laser components to assembling complete military defense systems. This contract establishes nLIGHT as a direct system partner for armed forces aiming to field high-energy laser weapons by 2028.

Under this multi-year agreement, we are developing and integrating complete containerized high-energy laser weapon systems.

2. Supply Bottlenecks Defer Product Revenue into Next Year

Constraints in the Chinese optical supply chain forced nLIGHT to defer $15 million in commercial product shipments into the first half of 2027. Management fully exited its operations in China during the quarter, incurring restructuring costs while qualifying alternative suppliers to build a more resilient domestic footprint.

Third quarter revenue excludes approximately $15 million of product revenue that we were unable to ship due to supply chain constraints.
— Joe Corso, Chief Financial Officer

3. Strategic Pivot Away from Cutting and Welding Improves Margins

nLIGHT completed its strategic exit from low-margin industrial cutting and welding markets to concentrate resources on defense applications and advanced manufacturing. Eliminating commoditized product lines helped drive non-GAAP product gross margins — the share of sales remaining after direct production expenses — to a record 48.8%.

So we made a difficult, but, we believe, a good decision to rationalize that piece of our business exit, and shift the broader portfolio that is much more heavily weighted to the space and defense market.
— Joe Corso, Chief Financial Officer

Looking Ahead

Optical component shortages continue to constrain immediate delivery schedules, but management is aggressively expanding domestic sourcing and carrying higher inventory to meet customer demand. The company relies on its balance sheet of over $300 million in cash to build manufacturing capacity.

We continue to work with existing suppliers to obtain available material and to establish supply from locations outside of China.
— Scott Keeney, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

As military demand for directed energy weapons accelerates, nLIGHT is expanding its role in next-generation defense programs while protecting profitability.

We believe this combination of differentiated technology, system-level capability, manufacturing investment, and balance sheet strength positions nLIGHT to create substantial long-term value.
— Scott Keeney, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
