Is Google’s New Cryptocurrency Push a Reason to Buy Alphabet Stock?

November 7, 2026 · by TPW Pipeline

Alphabet (GOOGL +0.78%) (GOOG +0.78%) is expanding in crypto via a cryptocurrency custody service for financial institutions that it previewed on Oct. 28. Separately, on Oct. 30, the Binance crypto exchange, the world’s largest, said that hackers had stolen $6.3 billion from its coffers — the kind of loss Google says its service is designed to reduce.

Given the obvious and escalating need for secure crypto custody solutions amid widespread, ongoing cybersecurity challenges worldwide, will this be a new reason to buy Alphabet’s stock?

What Google is building

The new platform is called Multi-Party Compute (MPC), and it aims to provide more secure custody of cryptoassets by splitting each private key (the code that grants control of a crypto wallet) into several fragments.

Separate, isolated computer systems, which can include servers at rival cloud computing companies, then hold those fragments. Then, before any funds can be spent, Google’s system evaluates whether the spending complies with the owner’s rules and approves the transaction only if everything checks out.

At launch, MPC will support the transaction signing methods used by Ethereum and Solana, among other cryptoassets, and Alphabet already uses the system to protect its own assets stored on both chains. MPC adds to Google’s earlier crypto work, including Google Cloud Universal Ledger (GCUL), a private blockchain launched in 2025.

At first glance, there isn’t much to get excited about here for Alphabet shareholders or those considering buying its stock.

There are many existing crypto custody businesses, including those with similar security schemes, and a plethora of blockchains vying for adoption by financial institutions. What’s more, it isn’t clear that the Google brand is especially valuable or appealing for offering crypto products, so this launch alone shouldn’t push anyone to invest in Google stock.

It’s hard to make a dent in a top line that’s this large

The bigger reason Google’s new cryptocurrency efforts are unlikely to be meaningful for shareholders is that the existing revenue base is already so large that it’ll be nearly impossible to push it significantly higher.

Google Cloud’s Q3 2026 revenue was $30.7 billion, accounting for 24.1% of Alphabet’s $127.6 billion total revenue. Assuming MPC brought in $1 billion in 2027, when it’s expected to launch, that would equal just 0.8% of Google Cloud’s annualized revenue, and a tiny sliver of the company’s top line as a whole. Of course, in time that story could change, but again, with so many competitors in the target market, it’s hard to see how that would work out given the service’s current description and vision.

So, while there’s still a strong case for buying and holding Alphabet stock given its other businesses and sources of income, the new crypto push probably shouldn’t factor into investors’ decisions here.
