Ginkgo Bioworks: 3 Key Takeaways for Long-Term Investors

November 7, 2026 · by TPW Pipeline

On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Nov. 5, 2026, Ginkgo Bioworks (DNA +13.35%) announced a strategic transition toward commercializing autonomous laboratory hardware and cloud data services. For long-term investors, this operational evolution determines whether automated biology can build high-margin revenue streams while reducing cash burn. Three takeaways from management’s call explain how this transition is unfolding.

1. Big Pharma Adoption Secures Commercial Hardware Footprint

Selling autonomous lab hardware to major biopharma partners validates Ginkgo Bioworks’ technology while creating high customer switching costs. Pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk became the first to opt into this offering.

Novo Nordisk selected Ginkgo to build an autonomous lab at their new R&D site in Waltham. Very excited about this. This is our first sort of big pharma announcement of an autonomous lab that sends a signal to all the other companies in the industry.

2. Restructuring Stabilizes Liquidity and Reduces Operating Cash Burn

Cost cuts following restructuring efforts have improved adjusted EBITDA — which is earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization, a key measure of core operating profitability — while preserving cash.

We ended the quarter with $285 million in cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities and no bank debt, plus $86 million of restricted cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities for customers and operating activities.

3. Frontier AI Labs Drive Demand for Automated Biological Data

Artificial intelligence (AI) developers increasingly rely on physical laboratory data generation to train complex reasoning and biological design AI models.

And so, as long as I think the frontier AI labs want to keep pushing the boundary of their capabilities in these physical areas, I do think they’re going to want to train on physical data.
— Jason Kelly, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer

Looking Ahead

Demand for automated lab data accelerates as artificial intelligence developers seek physical experimental capacity. Modular architecture and cloud infrastructure provide scale advantages, while management monitors deployment efficiency.

We made a big push to cut back on spending while still making major investments in research and development around autonomous labs, AI and robotics in the laboratory, and that has also paid off.
— Jason Kelly, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer

Standardized hardware enclosures reduce setup times and support long-term recurring software revenue.

And so I do think what will happen as we get more mature in this area is the sort of time it takes to get a system installed will speed up relative to what you’ve seen in historical integrated automation just because our offering is more productized.
