Foolish Take

Normally, the first thing to note when examining a company’s revenue trend is seasonality: some times of the year have stronger buying patterns than others. For most stocks, compare revenue year over year, by quarter. Tech stocks are not known for having strong seasonality, but it exists nonetheless for some businesses. Docusign, for instance, sees seasonality because there are more agreements and documents signed in the fourth quarter of the calendar year. Monday.com’s seasonality is less dramatic, with some shifts seen as the calendar year turns and corporate budgets reset.

Even with the existence of seasonality for both businesses, this chart shows little effect on the growth of the businesses. The upwardly trending bars left to right indicate that each company is growing revenue at a healthy clip, offsetting any quarterly variation. For Docusign, sales in its current fiscal year are seen growing by nearly 9% to $3.5 billion, with a slightly better percentage gain in net income to $346 million. For Monday.com, its full-year sales should rise nearly 20% to $1.47 billion, but net income should weaken to about $68 million.

Revenue is perhaps the simplest metric investors have to judge a business by. As the chart shows, look for rising revenue, especially over similar periods of each year, and take comparable-quarter stagnation, or worse, declines, as a red flag.
