Coupang vs. GameStop: Which Consumer Stock Is a Better Buy Going Into 2027?
Investors looking for retail sector exposure face a choice between rapid digital expansion and a legacy chain’s turnaround. Choosing between Coupang (CPNG -0.79%) and GameStop (GME +3.93%) requires weighing high-growth logistics against a cash-heavy balance sheet.
Coupang dominates the South Korean e-commerce market with its proprietary logistics network, offering ultra-fast delivery. GameStop, once a mall-based video game retailer, is pivoting toward collectibles and digital assets while managing a massive cash pile. Both are significant players among retail stocks seeking to capture evolving consumer habits in the digital age.
The case for Coupang
Coupang is a technology-driven company that provides retail, restaurant delivery, video streaming, and fintech services. It operates a two-sided marketplace that connects over 25 million active customers with a vast array of suppliers and merchants. The company relies on its WOW membership program, and partners with various international manufacturers, such as Sartori Cheese, to export perishable goods to South Korea via its Rocket Fresh platform.
In its 2025 fiscal year (FY), revenue reached $34.5 billion, which represents a growth of 14.1% compared to the prior year. The company reported a net income of $208.0 million for the period, resulting in a net margin of 0.6%. This trend shows continued revenue expansion and consistent profitability compared to the $154.0 million in net income reported in the previous fiscal year.
As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio was 1.0x, meaning total debt is roughly equal to shareholder equity. The current ratio is 1.0x, indicating the company has just enough short-term assets to cover its immediate liabilities. Free cash flow for the year was $522.0 million. Note that stock-based compensation (SBC) represented 26.8% of operating cash flow, which inflates reported cash generation since SBC is a non-cash expense added back in the cash flow statement.
The case for GameStop
GameStop is a specialty retailer that offers video games, collectibles, and entertainment products through a global network of over 2,000 stores. The company serves its customer base through physical locations and e-commerce platforms, supported by loyalty programs like GameStop Pro. It also operates trade-in programs for used hardware and graded trading cards to maintain its relevance in the gaming community.
In FY 2025, ended on Jan. 31 of this year, revenue was $3.6 billion, representing a decline of 5.1% compared to the previous year. Despite the lower sales, the company achieved a net income of $418.4 million for the period. This resulted in a net margin of 11.5%, which is a significant improvement over the net margin reported in the prior fiscal year.
As of its January 2026 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio was 0.8x, meaning total debt is approximately 80% of shareholder equity. The current ratio is 15.3x, which is a measure of liquidity showing the company has over 15 times more current assets than current liabilities. Free cash flow for the fiscal year was $597.3 million, providing the company with substantial capital to fund its strategic initiatives.

Risk profile comparison
Coupang faces significant regulatory and legal risks, including an ongoing privacy investigation and penalties totaling nearly 624.7 billion Korean won. The company operates in an intensely competitive environment against large rivals such as Amazon (AMZN -0.35%). Operational risks include managing the expansion of its fulfillment infrastructure and the complexities of integrating acquisitions like Farfetch. Control is also concentrated with founder Bom Kim through a dual-class share structure.
GameStop deals with high stock price volatility that is often driven by speculative trading and short squeezes rather than business fundamentals. The company relies heavily on the strategic leadership of Ryan Cohen and must navigate a cyclical gaming industry that is shifting toward digital downloads from competitors like Microsoft (MSFT -0.99%). Its investment policy includes exposure to Bitcoin (BTC -0.21%), which introduces additional market volatility. Furthermore, the company faces challenges with its retail footprint and the execution of its attempted eBay (EBAY -1.13%) acquisition, which has shifted from a takeover bid to a potential partnership after eBay’s Board of Directors rejected GameStop’s buyout offer.
Valuation comparison
Coupang features a much lower P/S ratio than GameStop, though its Forward P/E is significantly higher due to thinner net margins.

Which stock would I buy for 2027?
Between retail giants Coupang and GameStop, I would buy the former. That said, Coupang’s sales growth was hampered after a cyberattack compromised customer data in its core South Korea market last year. While it ended 2025 with 14% year-over-year revenue growth, that slowed to 8% in the first quarter of 2026, then dropped to 4% in Q2.
Coupang’s Q3 results suggest it may have turned a corner on regaining customer trust. Its Q3 sales rose 7% year over year to $10 billion. If this performance extends into subsequent quarters, it suggests the black eye from the data breach may be behind it, making Coupang a stock to own.
The problem with GameStop is that it has yet to prove it possesses a sustainable business model. Its year-over-year sales decline in FY 2025 continues in 2026. In the company’s fiscal Q2, ended Aug. 1, it reported sales of $790.2 million, a steep decline from the prior year’s $972.2 million. Revenue fell due to store closures and the divestiture of its operations in France. Until GameStop can find a way to return to sustainable sales growth, Coupang is the superior sto
