Affirm: 3 Key Takeaways for Long-Term Investors

November 7, 2026 · by TPW Pipeline

On its first-quarter fiscal 2027 earnings call, held on Nov. 5, 2026, Affirm (AFRM -2.23%) raised its full-year growth floor to at least 30% and discussed expanding its automated risk-scoring technology. The buy now, pay later provider, which lets shoppers split purchases into installment payments, continues to gain market share in digital commerce by underwriting loans in real time. Expanding into artificial intelligence integrations and offline merchant software strengthens its long-term competitive position. Three takeaways from the call stand out.

1. New Transformer Model Doubles Underwriting Performance

Affirm deployed an automated underwriting model built on transformer artificial intelligence architecture, which evaluates subtle repayment patterns without human intervention. The upgraded system allows the platform to approve 2% to 3% more borrowers with zero incremental credit losses.

And so when we look at the traditional model in this new architecture compared to the performance of the future candidate and this new idea, the new idea performed twice as well.

2. Management Establishes 30% Annual Growth Floor

The company raised its full-year volume targets after expanding transaction activity in the first quarter. Management expects to maintain this trajectory long term because Affirm currently accounts for under 4% of total domestic e-commerce transactions.

We’ve set a floor for growth. That floor now starts with a 3 as well. We’re signing up for at least 30% growth this year.
— Rob O’Hare, Chief Financial Officer

3. Agentic AI Shopping Creates a Real-Time Pricing Advantage

Autonomous artificial intelligence software agents shopping on behalf of consumers will prioritize rational transaction costs and transparent loan terms. Affirm’s proprietary risk engine instantly calculates customized pricing for individual transactions, giving it a structural edge as automated shopping expands.

We’re the only game in town, broadly speaking, that knows how to price every transaction at an individual level in real time every time. So we think we’re going to benefit significantly in the world of agentic shopping.
— Max Levchin, Founder and Chief Executive Officer

Looking Ahead

Transaction volume is expanding at high-30s-percentage rates, and credit outcomes reflect deliberate operational choices rather than macroeconomic pressures. Direct-to-consumer cards and software platform integrations provide structural distribution advantages, while management maintains focus on pricing discipline and risk management.

Our credit outcomes are a choice point that we make in our business, where we want them to be. Everything we do is intentional with respect to credit.
— Michael Linford, President

Expanding merchant networks and proprietary machine-learning models position the business to capture long-term e-commerce market share.

So there’s not really a reason why this can’t continue for a very long time. Like it’s ours to screw up.
— Max Levchin, Founder and Chief Executive Officer
