Micron Technology vs. Western Digital: Which Tech Stock Is the Better Buy for 2027?

November 6, 2026 · by TPW Pipeline

The data-heavy world of artificial intelligence (AI) creates massive demand for storage and memory. This shift forces investors to choose between Micron Technology (MU -17.46%) and Western Digital (WDC -17.36%) as they eye long-term gains.

Micron specializes in DRAM and NAND memory used in everything from mobile phones to high-end servers. Western Digital focuses on hard disk drives and flash solutions, specifically targeting the cloud infrastructure sector. Both are booming right now, but the better buy may depend on which business holds up when the boom cools.

The case for Micron Technology

As one of the leading semiconductor stocks, Micron Technology designs and manufactures essential memory chips like DRAM and NAND. It serves a wide range of markets including data centers, mobile devices, and the automotive sector. In fiscal 2026 (which ended in September), over half of total revenue came from its top 10 customers, and such customer concentration adds a layer of risk to the business.

Fiscal 2026 revenue reached $133 billion, representing massive year-over-year growth of approximately 256%. Net income grew 895% to $85 billion. This reflects a significant increase from its performance in recent years as memory prices soared due to limited supply and high demand.

As for financial health, the company has virtually no debt. Its current ratio, which measures the ability to cover short-term obligations with current assets, sits at a healthy 3.3x. Micron also generated nearly $59 billion in free cash flow, which is the cash left over after paying for its operations and capital equipment.

The case for Western Digital

Western Digital provides storage solutions for enterprise clients and hyperscale cloud providers. The cloud end market is vital for the company, accounting for nearly 89% of net revenue in its latest fiscal year.

Trailing-12-month (TTM) revenue through the October quarter reached $14.5 billion, representing growth of 43% over the previous year. Net income reached $10 billion. Western Digital is benefiting from the same dynamic as Micron, with limited supply of storage products driving a favorable pricing environment.

Western Digital has a debt-to-equity ratio of roughly 0.1x. The company holds a current ratio of nearly 1.4x and generated approximately $4.3 billion in free cash flow over the past year.

Risk profile comparison

Both companies face risks from the extreme price volatility often found in the memory and data storage market. These stocks could also fall if anything slowed data center construction, such as new regulations or other restrictions, or if AI infrastructure spending slowed.

Micron competes against major rivals like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. Additionally, geopolitical tensions and trade restrictions involving China could limit the company’s ability to sell to key infrastructure operators. Western Digital competes against Seagate and Toshiba in the storage market.

Valuation comparison

Micron trades at a lower Forward P/E, measuring price against future earnings estimates, and a lower P/S ratio, comparing its share price to revenue over the past twelve months.

Which stock would I buy for 2027?

The better buy is not the stock with the highest upside, but the one that will be more resilient during the next downturn. Western Digital is better positioned to handle a stall in data center spending, and it’s the stock I would buy right now.

Micron has seen its revenue and margins soar over the last year, but that sharp swing in its results also shows how vulnerable it is to a sudden dip in memory prices. While it is signing long-term customer agreements to help smooth out future cycles, it won’t cover all of its revenue. It is still vulnerable to a downturn in the memory market.

Western Digital is exposed to similar booms and busts as Micron. However, demand for storage products tends to be more stable than memory. This is because data centers will continue to accumulate more data even as spending on new server orders slows.

This is evident in each company’s past gross margin. Over the last 10 years, Micron’s gross margin has swung from negative 9% in fiscal 2023 to as high as 81% in fiscal 2026. Western Digital’s lowest gross margin over the same period was 22% in fiscal 2023, and its highest was 49% in fiscal 2026.

Western Digital’s greater resilience is also why the stock trades at a higher P/E. Investors are paying a lower P/E multiple for Micron because they expect greater volatility in its financial results if memory prices fall.

At this point in the cycle, I would rather buy Western Digital heading into 2027.
