Novo Nordisk: 3 Key Takeaways for Long-Term Investors
On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Nov. 4, 2026, Novo Nordisk (NVO +4.95%) announced raised full-year financial guidance alongside a return to volume growth across its core therapy areas. The drugmaker is navigating lower realized prices in the U.S. market while expanding its global footprint and advancing next-generation metabolic treatments. Three things management said stand out.
1. Wegovy Pill Accelerates Global Market Expansion
Management is speeding up the global rollout of its oral obesity treatment to capture international demand before loss of exclusivity, or LOE (when patent protections expire and generic competition enters), affects older products in key regions. Expanding into new international markets helps build early market share in the oral segment.
By first half of 2027, we now expect Wegovy pill to be available in more than 20 markets.
— Emil Kongshøj Larsen, Executive Vice President, International Operations
2. Patient Volume Recovery Rebounds Across Core Therapies
After a flat start to the year, patient additions accelerated across both diabetes and obesity divisions. Expanding the patient base by 1.3 million in a single quarter provides underlying volume growth as U.S. net prices face ongoing pressure.
In short, more patients are choosing Novo treatments, and we are reaching them across both of our core therapy areas.
— Mike Doustdar, Chief Executive Officer
3. Next-Generation CagriSema Trial Shows Superior Efficacy
Novo Nordisk is building its defense against competing glucagon-like peptide-1, or GLP-1 (a metabolic hormone treatment class), therapies by advancing CagriSema into late-stage head-to-head trials. Demonstrating greater weight loss than existing market options strengthens the clinical case for its next-generation pipeline.
At one milligram of each component, CagriSema demonstrated superior weight loss of 12.4% compared with 9.1% for tirzepatide, while delivering on par non-inferior HbA1c reduction of around 1.7 percentage points.
— Martin Holst Lange, Executive Vice President, Research and Development and Chief Scientific Officer
Looking Ahead
Patient additions are expanding in both International Operations and U.S. markets, supported by strong brand equity and manufacturing scale. Novo Nordisk is watching global pricing discipline and regulatory approvals as it prepares for major product launches.
Across the organizations, we are focusing on turning our innovation into successful launches that makes a meaningful difference for patients and society.
— Mike Doustdar, Chief Executive Officer
Long-term performance hinges on maintaining market leadership while navigating patent expirations and contract pricing dynamics across key geographies.
I leave with great confidence in our strategy, our strong financial foundation, and above all, the people who drive Novo forward every day.
— Karsten Munk Knudsen, Chief Financial Officer
