Small Phones, Big Style: Why the Enough Phone Might Be Your Perfect Fit

November 4, 2026 · by jessicaharper

Okay, the internet is arguing about tiny phones again, and honestly? There’s a money lesson hiding in this one.

Here’s the tea: Enough Phone is starting preorders today for its first device, built around a 5.3-inch screen — which they say is apparently the smallest screen they could find that actually works for a modern smartphone. Meanwhile, our phones have ballooned from the original 3.5-inch screens to the glass slabs we can barely wrap one hand around. Everyone *says* they want something smaller. Enough Phone is about to find out if anyone actually puts their money where their mouth is.

And babe, that gap between what people say and what they buy? That’s basically my entire coaching practice in one product launch. 💅

**Say it with me: stated preferences ≠ actual spending**

Every single week, someone tells me they want to spend less, save more, and live simpler. And every week, the same person’s bank statement tells a different story. It’s not because they’re lying — it’s because our money follows our habits, not our intentions. We’re all walking around saying we want minimalism while clicking add-to-cart on the biggest, shiniest version of everything.

That’s exactly the bet Enough Phone is making, just in reverse. They’re betting that the *stated* preference — smaller, simpler, more manageable — is real enough to become an *actual* purchase. Most companies bet the other way, and honestly, the phone industry has decades of sales data backing them up. If people genuinely wanted small phones, the market wouldn’t have drifted from 3.5 inches to pocket-busting slabs in the first place. The market votes with wallets, not with wishful comments under tech videos.

This is why I tell my coaching clients: don’t audit your words, audit your receipts. Your bank statement is the most honest journal you’ll ever keep.

**The sunk cost of “bigger is better”**

Here’s something wild to sit with — the smartphone industry trained us to equate bigger with better, and we accepted it so completely that a 5.3-inch screen now sounds *quaint*. Remember, the first modern smartphones had 3.5-inch screens. That was normal. That fit in a pocket. Nobody felt deprived.

Somewhere along the way, bigger became the default upgrade path, and we stopped questioning it. Sound familiar? It’s the same mechanism behind lifestyle creep. Your income goes up, your spending drifts up to match, and within a couple of years the new, higher level of spending feels like the bare minimum. You didn’t decide you *needed* more — the default just grew, and you grew with it.

Here’s what I’d do: pick one area of your life where the default has quietly inflated — phone plans, subscriptions, dining out, your car — and ask, “What would the 2010 version of me think about this number?” Sometimes the answer is “honestly, fair, I like nice things.” Sometimes the answer is “wait, why am I paying for all this?” Both answers are useful. Only one of them requires you to actually do something about it.

**Preorders are a personality test**

Enough Phone opening preorders today is the moment of truth, because preorders are where talk becomes money. It’s easy to cheer for a niche product. It’s a whole different thing to commit your cash before the reviews roll in.

And I kind of love this for us, because it’s a perfect mirror for how we handle every “I should really…” in our financial lives. Saying “I want to start investing” costs nothing. Setting up an automatic transfer — that’s the preorder. Saying “I’d love a smaller, simpler life” is a vibe. Actually canceling the storage unit or downsizing the apartment — that’s the preorder. The commitment is where the identity shift happens.

If you’ve been *saying* you want to build wealth but haven’t made a single move, take this as your sign to place your own preorder on yourself. Open the brokerage account. Automate $25 to an index fund. Make it real before you feel ready, because ready is a feeling that shows up after action, not before.

**The niche-product money mindset**

Small phones are a niche. So is financial independence. So is investing as a woman in your twenties, budgeting with intention,
