L3Harris: 3 Key Takeaways for Long-Term Investors

November 4, 2026 · by TPW Pipeline

On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 29, 2026, L3Harris (LHX -0.46%) reported organic revenue growth of 9% and a backlog of $53 billion. Demand for missile propulsion and defense communications continues to expand across military programs. That growing order book offers multiyear revenue visibility for long-term shareholders. Three takeaways from management’s comments stand out.

1. Missile Demand Drives Record Backlog Expansion

A $11 billion contractual booking for Patriot Advanced Capability-3 and Terminal High Altitude Area Defense missile systems expanded total backlog to $53 billion. That massive order volume secures years of manufacturing activity in core defense sectors.

The third quarter represents a watershed moment in our Missile Solutions business. We booked $11 billion of contractual backlog, representing years of future deliveries, validating the investments we made, and we continue to make to fuel the growth of this business.
— Sam Mehta, Chief Executive Officer

2. Factory Automation Accelerates Missile Rocket Deliveries

Management is using artificial intelligence and automated testing to remove factory bottlenecks in missile production. Faster quality checks allow factory lines to double annual rocket motor output without sacrificing product quality.

For instance, we are harnessing the power of automation and artificial intelligence to accelerate delivery of PAC-3 solid rocket motors to customers, in some cases, reducing the amount of traditional manual quality inspections from 21 hours to 6.5 hours per motor.

3. Management Shifts Focus From Mergers to Execution

After acquiring multiple businesses, the defense contractor is halting major dealmaking to direct capital toward internal operations and debt reduction. Management plans to fund a $3 billion missile capacity expansion using internally generated cash flow.

Lastly, for M&A, we do not expect to engage in any large-scale M&A in the foreseeable future. We believe we will create the most value by focusing on our business and driving operational performance.
— Ken Sharp, Chief Financial Officer

Looking Ahead

A $53 billion backlog and elevated global defense spending position the company to navigate shifting political budgets. Internal investments in manufacturing capacity create structural cost advantages over competitors. Management focuses on operational execution, debt reduction, and disciplined capital allocation.

We are comfortable operating in a dynamic political and economic environment and remain confident that we are well-positioned with our strong backlog in areas of continued priority and urgency.
— Sam Mehta, Chief Executive Officer

Substantial free cash flow gives the company financial flexibility to expand facilities while returning capital to shareholders.

We will leverage our financial strength for continued flexibility, whether that is consistent dividends, targeted share buybacks, or strategic portfolio shaping.
