Your Guide to the Vanguard ETF Powering Wealth With Nvidia, Apple, and More
Okay besties, we need to talk about what’s really inside those shiny growth ETFs everyone’s been buzzing about. 💅
So here’s the tea: the Morningstar U.S. Total Market index includes all 3,476 companies listed on American stock exchanges. That’s the whole buffet — the Amazons, yes, but also the small plumbing supply company in Ohio and everything in between. When most people buy a total market fund, they think they’re getting a little taste of everything.
But then there’s the Morningstar U.S. Mega Cap Growth index, and this one plays a very different game. It holds exclusively America’s 52 most valuable growth companies. Just 52. And here’s the part that made me do a double take: those 52 companies account for almost half the value of the entire U.S. Total Market Index. That’s right — those 52 companies are worth almost as much as the other 3,000+ combined.
Let that sink in for a second. 🤯
Think of it like your closet. Your total market fund is your entire wardrobe — every t-shirt, every blazer, every pair of jeans you’ve ever bought. The mega cap growth index is just your 52 most expensive designer pieces. And somehow, those 52 pieces are worth as much as everything else hanging in your closet combined. That’s the level of concentration we’re talking about.
Here’s why this matters for you, especially if you’re newer to investing: concentration cuts both ways. When those mega cap companies win big, a fund loaded with them can seriously outperform. This is why I tell my coaching clients to look under the hood of any ETF before buying — a fund’s name tells you very little, but its holdings tell you everything.
The Vanguard growth ETF tied to this mega cap index is a perfect example of this dynamic in action, with a huge chunk of its portfolio sitting in just a handful of the biggest names in tech — think Nvidia, Alphabet, Apple, and Microsoft. When you buy a fund like that, you’re not really buying 50+ companies. You’re making a concentrated bet that a small group of giants keeps winning.
Here’s what I’d do: I wouldn’t treat a mega cap growth fund as my entire portfolio. I’d treat it as one piece of the puzzle — maybe a satellite holding alongside a broader total market or S&P 500 fund that gives you exposure to the full range of American businesses. That way you get upside potential without putting all your eggs (gorgeous, golden eggs, but still) in one very expensive basket.
A few questions to ask before buying any concentrated growth fund:
**How much of the fund is in its top 10 holdings?** If a handful of companies dominate, your returns will live and die by those names. That’s not automatically bad — but you should know it going in, not find out during a dip.
**Can I stomach the volatility?** Concentrated funds swing harder in both directions. If watching your balance drop 20% would make you panic-sell at the worst possible moment, a more diversified fund might be a better fit for your nervous system — and your net worth.
**Does this fit my actual goal?** Investing isn’t one-size-fits-all. Money you need in two years doesn’t belong in a volatile growth fund, period. Long-term wealth-building money? That’s where these funds can earn their keep.
One more thing I love reminding my clients: performance chasing is real, and it’s sneaky. Funds that hold this year’s hottest stocks look genius in hindsight. But you’re not investing in the past — you’re investing in what happens next. Mega cap growth has had an incredible run, and past dominance doesn’t guarantee the future looks the same. The 52 companies at the top today aren’t guaranteed to be there in a decade. (Ask anyone who invested in the “unbeatable” giants of 2000.)
The empowering takeaway? You don’t need to pick the perfect fund on day one. You need to understand what you own. When you know that your growth fund is really a concentrated bet on a few dozen giants — and you’ve decided that risk fits your plan — you’re investing with intention. And intentional investing is what separates building wealth from just throwing money at tickers and hoping.
That’s the whole vibe: know your holdings, match them to your goals, and keep the rest of your portfolio diversified enough to sleep well at night. 😌
