ResMed: 3 Key Takeaways for Long-Term Investors
On its first quarter of fiscal year 2027 earnings call, held on Oct. 29, 2026, ResMed (RMD -9.05%) reported 7% core revenue growth alongside expanding gross margins. The medical device manufacturer is expanding its digital health ecosystem and converting patient diagnosis interest into steady therapy adoption. Three takeaways from management’s comments highlight where the business is heading.
1. Manufacturing Productivity Drives Gross Margin Expansion
Supply chain efficiencies and manufacturing improvements pushed gross margin, or the percentage of revenue remaining after production costs, higher despite inflation pressures on electronic components. Operations teams accelerated facility expansion in Indiana to optimize delivery timelines across North America.
Specific to Q1, margins expanded about 50 basis points. And again, a testament to the productivity gains across the entire manufacturing and supply chain team.

2. Obesity Medications Drive Higher Patient Therapy Adoption
Patients using GLP-1s, or glucagon-like peptide 1 weight-loss drugs, initiate continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP, therapy for sleep apnea at higher rates than non-users. Management noted these patients also stay on therapy longer and purchase replacement masks more consistently over three years.
We are still seeing that patients who have scripts for both CPAP and GLP-1s are more than 11% more likely to start on CPAP therapy than patients who have a script for CPAP alone.

3. Divestiture Proceeds Fund Record Capital Return to Shareholders
Management sold MatrixCare, its noncore long-term care software business, to concentrate resources on primary medical devices and digital health software. Sale proceeds directly funded share repurchases, allowing the company to return substantial capital to investors.
Together with our dividend, we returned more than $1 billion to our shareholders this quarter. This is a record for ResMed and reflects our conviction that investing in our company is a compelling high return on investment opportunity.

Looking Ahead
Demand is expanding across sleep therapy channels, where operational leverage drives profit faster than revenue. On the supply side, multi-region manufacturing facilities provide structural advantages while leadership maintains pricing discipline.
We remain very excited about our 2030 strategy, and we’re confident in our 5-year outlook that features high single-digit top-line revenue growth and bottom-line earnings growth that’s higher than revenue growth with leverage.
— Michael Farrell, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Capital allocation reflects that confidence, with priorities centered on core research, targeted acquisitions, and share repurchases. And connected device partnerships position the company to capture expanding diagnostic demand as the market grows.
Looking forward, we will continue to prioritize reinvestment in the business while maintaining our commitment to the dividend, opportunistic share repurchases, and an optimized capital structure.
