Pinterest: 3 Key Takeaways for Long-Term Investors
On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 29, 2026, Pinterest (PINS +3.75%) delivered global revenue below management’s expected guidance range. Commercial intent across visual search remains high, but monetization hurdles in international markets present a key test for long-term investors. Three takeaways from the call show where the business is heading.
1. European Trade Rules Cut Into International Ad Growth
European regulators removed tax exemptions on cheap cross-border imports, which forced international sellers to pull back ad spending. That friction knocked three points off global revenue growth, but management expects merchants to adapt over time by shifting to local fulfillment.
The regulatory impact was greater than we anticipated, as it is inherently hard to forecast when changes take effect during the quarter. The pullback from cross-border sellers accounted for approximately 3 points of the sequential change in our global revenue growth rate from Q2 to Q3.

2. Artificial Intelligence Drives Search Before Users Type Words
Artificial intelligence (AI) acts as a visual discovery engine that anticipates shopping taste. Proactive recommendations kick off most consumer visits, helping Pinterest lock in user focus before traditional text searches start.
Approximately 70% of search journeys on Pinterest begin with a proactive recommendation made by our AI-enabled systems before a user types a word.

3. Automated Ad Partnerships Expand Commercial Placement Channels
Management connected the platform to major demand-side platforms, or DSPs, which are automated ad-buying systems. This integration lets Pinterest capture automated campaign spending from external ad networks, such as Alphabet-owned Google Display & Video (DV) 360, Amazon‘s Display, Video, and Audio Plus (DVA+) offering, and Magnite‘s software platform, which provides publishers and website owners the ability to insert digital advertising alongside their content.
As we increasingly see advertisers buying programmatically, we want to meet them more where they are. As we announced this week, we’re now working with DSPs that represent two-thirds of the DSP market, including Google DV360, Amazon DVA+, Yahoo DSP with Magnite as our supply side partner.

Looking Ahead
User engagement is reaching record levels across global markets. Differentiated visual intent, growing Gen Z adoption, and proprietary AI tools provide clear advantages while leadership monitors international ad sales restructuring.
While our near-term revenue growth is not where we want it to be, I’m proud of the experience we continue to deliver for users. I have full confidence in our team, strategy, and the actions we are taking to durably reaccelerate growth over time.
— Bill Ready, Chief Executive Officer
New executive leadership is now focusing on advertiser performance tools to drive long-term monetization.
I’m looking forward to getting to know the analyst and investor community and working with Bill, the board, and the whole team to realize Pinterest’s full potential as a world-leading visual search, shopping, and advertising platform.
