UPS: 3 Key Takeaways for Long-Term Investors
On its third quarter of 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 27, 2026, UPS (UPS +0.86%) raised its full-year financial outlook. Operating margins expanded as higher-margin commercial growth replaced lower-margin package volume. Three takeaways from management stand out for long-term investors.
1. Small Business Expansion Drives Higher Quality Domestic Volume
Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), referring to smaller enterprise customers, expanded average daily volume by 3.7% year-over-year. This shift increases higher-margin package mix while total volume drops from planned reductions in lower-margin accounts.
In the quarter, SMBs represented a record of 35.1% of total U.S. volume.

2. Revenue per Piece Outpaces Processing Expenses
Revenue per piece (RPP), the average revenue generated per package, increased 6.1% year-over-year. Growth in RPP outpaced cost per piece (CPP), the average expense to handle each package, driving domestic margin expansion.
For the second consecutive quarter, revenue per piece growth outpaced cost per piece growth, contributing to 60 basis points of year-over-year operating margin expansion in the third quarter.

3. Wireless Tracking Technology Replaces Manual Package Scanning
Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, a wireless system that tracks shipments without manual scanning, eliminates billions of manual package scans. Automated sorting hubs now process nearly 70% of holiday volume, lowering temporary vehicle leases and staffing needs.
Our RFID capabilities are increasing productivity with little to no scanning while improving package visibility and on-time delivery.

Looking Ahead
At UPS, operations are reaching an inflection point across global networks, and leadership is raising full-year revenue targets as network efficiency gains materialize.
Our third quarter performance exceeded our expectations and gives us greater confidence in the trajectory we established at the start of the year.
— Brian Dykes, Chief Financial Officer
On the competitive side, network automation and growth in specialized healthcare logistics provide durable structural advantages. And leadership is closely watching pricing discipline and international trade lane recovery as Amazon volume continues to decline.
We’ve experienced all of that, but now we’re seeing the strategy come to life.
