SPS Commerce: 3 Key Takeaways for Long-Term Investors

October 31, 2026 · by TPW Pipeline

On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 29, 2026, SPS Commerce (SPSC -3.25%) announced that its third-quarter profit exceeded internal targets due to operational efficiencies. Long-term investors gain clarity on how automation accelerates customer onboarding and expands profit margins despite revenue headwinds from major retail partners. Three things management said stand out.

1. Agentic AI Onboarding Speeds Customer Compliance and Cuts Errors

Automation in software integration allows suppliers to go live on trading networks in hours rather than months. By handling complex enterprise resource planning (ERP) integrations (software that manages core business data), artificial intelligence reduces costly shipping errors and attracts new clients.

Since adopting agentic onboarding, hundreds of suppliers have achieved full compliance with new trading partners within 24 hours. Agentic onboarding is also strengthening our competitive position, particularly when new customers plan to integrate their ERP system with the SPS network.

2. Amazon Policy Changes Drive Shift Toward Subscription Models

Unfavorable policy updates at Amazon reduced short-term revenue recovery yields, as fees depend on funds recovered from suppliers. SPS Commerce is responding by moving clients to predictable subscription contracts that stabilize recurring cash flow.

We have seen these policy change headwinds with Amazon. However, Amazon is a major portion of this ecosystem. We’re still bringing on new customers, especially with multiple retailer support.

3. Operating Leverage Lifts Profit Margins Above Target

Profitability expanded as earlier investments in back-office infrastructure began generating structural economies of scale. Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA), a metric tracking core profitability, surpassed company targets.

Adjusted EBITDA increased 17% to $70.9 million or 36% of revenue, outperforming our long-term margin target of 35%. This reflects SPS’ strong operational execution as we continue to unlock efficiencies across the organization.

Looking Ahead

Gross profit margins are expanding as automated software onboarding reduces manual labor across customer integrations. Network-effect advantages and high switching costs position the company to compound long-term cash flow, while management monitors pricing discipline across software tiers.

We expect continued margin expansion to be driven by operating leverage and increasing use of onboarding agents, which today is reflected in our gross margin expansion.
— Joseph Del Preto, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Network intelligence built over decades creates a durable competitive moat as proprietary data powers autonomous supply chain workflows.

With our agentic strategy advancing, we are uniquely positioned to deliver sustainable, profitable growth backed by the combination of AI and SPS’ intelligent network, a powerful and durable competitive moat that no one else can match.
