Q3 earnings beat and full-year guidance raise

Herc Holdings delivered a strong third quarter on Tuesday, posting total revenue of $1.36 billion, up 4.6% year over year. Adjusted earnings per share reached $3.91, up from $2.22 in the prior-year period, while GAAP net income grew to $104 million. Equipment rental revenue reached a record $1.25 billion, driven by a 3.6% improvement in dollar utilization despite fleet growth of under 2%.

Management raised full-year 2026 equipment rental revenue guidance to between $4.48 billion and $4.55 billion, up from prior forecasts. It also boosted its full-year adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) target to a range of $2.10 billion to $2.15 billion. Expanded fleet deployment across large infrastructure, energy, and data center developments propelled the higher outlook.

Herc Holdings rents industrial and construction equipment, including aerial lifts, earthmoving machines, and power generators, to commercial contractors and industrial facility operators. Integration of its H&E Equipment Services acquisition has unlocked operating scale, allowing the company to serve complex mega projects across North America more efficiently than smaller rivals. Equipment rental peers like United Rentals (URI -1.20%) and WillScot Holdings (WSC -0.97%) have also tracked industrial project demand, but Herc Holdings captured outsized operating leverage this quarter.

The company’s stock carries a trailing price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 46.5. While elevated, that multiple reflects recent acquisition accounting costs alongside accelerating operational earnings power. This week’s second guidance raise confirms that pricing power and fleet efficiency are offsetting high borrowing costs, shifting the investment thesis from cyclical survival to margin-driven compounding.

What’s next for Herc Holdings

Investors will watch for the execution of newly awarded mega-project assignments as the fourth quarter approaches. The next scheduled quarterly earnings announcement is set for Feb. 16, 2027. Fleet utilization rates and capital expenditure discipline will indicate whether current pricing strength can persist through seasonal winter slowdowns.

Balance sheet leverage remains the main operational constraint. Herc Holdings ended the third quarter with $66 million in cash and short-term investments as of Sept. 30, 2026, against $9.6 billion in total debt, including lease obligations. While strong cash generation easily covers interest costs, heavy leverage limits flexibility if broader non-residential construction activity cools down.

Is Herc Holdings stock a buy?

While Herc Holdings reported a strong quarter and raised 2026 guidance, potential investors should recognize that the industrial stock is far from a screaming buy at this point. With Herc Holdings reporting only $66 million in cash at the end of the quarter and $9.6 billion in debt, liquidity remains a concern — especially if commercial construction declines.

At this point, those intent on Herc Holdings stock should wait for a pullback before considering a position, given the higher risk it currently represents. In the meantime, investors eager to act sooner rather than later may consider an industrial exchange-traded fund (ETF) that includes Herc Holdings to gain exposure.
