Foolish Take

Normally, the first thing to note when examining a company’s revenue trend is seasonality: some times of the year have stronger buying patterns than others. For most stocks, compare revenue year over year, by quarter. Even as a relatively new business sector, there is seasonality in cannabis, with sales seeing periodic strength during the summer months and especially April 20, given the calendar date is a well-known marijuana pop culture reference.

When viewing the chart for both Tilray and Canopy Growth from left to right, it may seem revenue is volatile, but in fact, viewed quarterly against the prior year’s comparable quarter, there is steady growth for both.

Revenue is probably the simplest metric investors have to judge a business by. It is also one of the most important ones. As the chart shows, look for rising revenue over similar periods of each year, and take comparable-quarter stagnation, or worse, declines, as a red flag.
