Crypto Market Today, Oct. 27: Bitcoin Bounces Back, but Whales Are Turning Bearish For the First Time Since June
As of early evening on Oct. 27, Bitcoin (BTC +1.09%) rose 0.83% to $80,676.04, Ethereum (ETH +1.60%) rose 1.08% to $2,345.46, and Solana (SOL +0.84%) rose 0.40% to $101.16.
What’s driving crypto markets
Crypto markets saw some relief in the second half of the U.S. session after a poor start to the day. The world’s most valuable cryptocurrency, Bitcoin briefly slipped below $80,000 earlier in the morning but eventually put together a small rally to create some distance between the pivotal $80,000 mark.
In other notable news, Galaxy Digital (GLXY +9.57%) released a report in support of the view that Bitcoin may be in an accumulation zone and that the bear market is effectively over.
In a separate report from digital asset analytics platform, Glassnode, the company highlighted that Bitcoin whales on Hyperliquid (HYPE +4.96%) turned net short for the first time since Bitcoin rallied off its June lows
Crypto ETF snapshot
Spot Bitcoin and Ethereum funds traded higher, with iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT +1.06%) up 1.06%, Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC +1.08%) up 1.08%, and iShares Ethereum Trust ETF (ETHA +1.32%) up 1.32%.
ETF flows remain worth watching after several days of persistent outflows. A return to positive inflows across crypto ETFs could signal renewed investor confidence and suggest the crypto market is beginning to stabilize.
What this means for investors
After crypto markets struggled yesterday despite gains across the broader stock market, today’s rally alongside the S&P 500 (^GSPC +0.60%) and Nasdaq (NDAQ -0.34%) is an encouraging sign.
However, crypto still has plenty of ground to make up. Many altcoins remain beaten down and near important price levels. While the market continues to show signs of weakness, it has yet to break down decisively.
Investors should look to Bitcoin for clues about where the broader crypto market is headed. Holding the $80,000 region would be an encouraging sign for buyers and could open the door for a recovery toward $85,000.
For a new rally to take root, a sustained move above $87,000 would provide a more convincing indication that buyers are regaining control and that a broader recovery may be underway.
