Advance Auto Parts vs. Booking Holdings: Flat Against Volatile Revenue

October 27, 2026 · by TPW Pipeline

Advance Auto Parts: Flat Revenue Over Recent Quarters

Advance Auto Parts (AAP -1.65%) primarily generates revenue by selling a wide array of automotive replacement components, batteries, fluids, and routine maintenance accessories to both professional mechanics and individual do-it-yourself consumers through its physical stores.

It recently returned to positive year-to-date free cash flow after earlier outflows, and it separately revised its operational guidance regarding new retail store and market hub openings across its regional territories for the remainder of the year.

Booking Holdings: Seasonal Fluctuations With Upward Revenue Momentum

Booking Holdings (BKNG -1.96%) earns most of its revenue by operating a global network of digital platforms that facilitate online travel accommodations, flight price comparisons, vehicle rentals, and restaurant reservation services for everyday consumers and corporate clients.

It launched an automated personal travel agent platform named Vayo to assist consumers, while its OpenTable subsidiary concurrently extended a dining collection agreement with Visa across multiple North American markets, including the United States and Canada.

Why Revenue Matters for Investors

Revenue here refers to the data provider’s standardized income statement revenue line item, which shows the total money a business brings in before paying operating expenses.

Note: for Q1 2025, Q1 2026, the two companies’ reporting periods differ in length by more than 14 days due to differing fiscal calendars, which can make the change between quarters look bigger or smaller than an apples-to-apples comparison would show.

Foolish Take

The first thing to note when examining a company’s revenue trend is seasonality: some times of the year have stronger buying patterns than others. That is seen most distinctly in Booking Holdings’ revenue bars in the chart: the third quarter is the best each year. For most stocks, compare revenue year over year by quarter.

In the case of Booking Holdings, revenue will grow about 9% this year to $29.3 billion. Net income will take a healthier 50% leap to about $8.1 billion, according to consensus analyst estimates.

Booking is successfully shifting from an agency model to a primarily merchant model. That means it used to make its money as an agent–connecting travelers to a hotel and collecting a commission while the hotel manages collecting payment from the traveler. In the merchant model, Booking “buys” capacity from hotels and other providers on its platform and collects payment directly from the traveler. This tends to lead to fatter margins.

The company is also in excellent financial shape. It has $16 billion in cash, which makes its balance sheet investment grade. A plus for shareholders, the company has a $20 billion share buyback program. The brand is increasingly a destination for travelers, which means it is paying less to companies like Google for search engine visibility. Today, two-thirds of Booking.com’s visitors are “organic,” meaning they are direct visitors, not from paid ad traffic.

Advance Auto Parts is in the midst of turning around the struggles it has experienced over the past few years around sales growth, margins, and market share. The aftermarket auto parts business has been in a slump, due largely to a mix of factors: weak do-it-yourselfer demand, vehicle electrification, intense competition, and general pocketbook pressures on consumers.

Company management has been addressing the business’ issues by rolling out a new multi-year turnaround program. That started in late 2024, including closing stores, optimizing store footprints, and overhauling its supply chain. To date, the program has produced mixed results.

As the chart shows, first-quarter fiscal 2026 revenue was $2.6 billion, which was much better than expected, and came with net income of $25 million. But the second quarter disappointed the street, and shares plunged as revenue fell short of consensus at $2 billion, even as net income and other metrics beat expectations.

Analysts see full-year 2026 sales slightly lower at $8.57 billion, with net income improving to $167 million, roughly four times 2025 levels.
