Another Stock Split Hype Circle—Congrats, Your Pizza Still Costs the Same

October 26, 2026 · by noahrichter

Let’s get one thing straight before Wall Street’s hype machine finishes warming up: a stock split changes exactly nothing about what a company owns, earns, or is worth. It’s an accounting cosmetic procedure. You had one $100 bill; now you have two $50 bills. Congratulations on your wealth. Same bill.

Yet here we are, with multiple high-profile splits announced this year, and investors treating each announcement like a product launch from Steve Jobs’ ghost. AI has genuinely driven market gains—real earnings, real revenue growth, however debatable the valuations. Stock splits? They’re being credited with “lifting the market to new heights.” That’s not analysis. That’s astrology with a Bloomberg terminal.

Here’s the actual mechanics, since apparently nobody bothers to check: when a company executes a split—say, 2-for-1—the share count doubles and the price halves. Your 10 shares at $200 become 20 shares at $100. Market cap: identical.
