Seasonal September Weakness Puts Semiconductor Names in Focus

September has historically been the weakest month of the year for equity markets, a pattern analysts refer to as the “September Effect.” Unlike every other month on the calendar, September has averaged negative returns over time, prompting some investors to sit on the sidelines or reposition their portfolios ahead of a historically strong fourth quarter, when October, November, and December have delivered some of the strongest average gains.

Against that seasonal backdrop, attention has turned to three semiconductor companies — NVIDIA Corporation, Broadcom Inc., and Micron Technology, Inc. — as names that could move independently of any seasonal softness.

NVIDIA, which describes itself as a data center scale AI infrastructure company operating through its Compute & Networking and Graphics segments, traded at $223.67, down 0.73% from the prior close of $225.31. Its market capitalization stands at roughly $5.56 trillion, the largest of the three companies.

Broadcom, which designs semiconductor devices and infrastructure software across its Semiconductor Solutions and Infrastructure Software segments, moved in the opposite direction. Shares rose 2.75% to $357.61 from a previous close of $348.04, giving the company a market cap of approximately $1.99 trillion.

Micron posted the largest move of the group, climbing 6.58% to $1,016.59 from a prior close of $953.84. The memory and storage maker, organized around its Cloud Memory, Core Data Center, and Mobile business units, carries a market capitalization of about $1.15 trillion.

The dispersion in Tuesday’s moves underscores a broader theme: even within the semiconductor industry, the AI infrastructure, custom silicon, and memory segments can trade on distinct catalysts. Memory pricing, hyperscaler capital expenditure plans, and data center demand each influence these companies differently, and none of them track the seasonal calendar in a mechanical way.

It is worth noting that the source commentary framing these three stocks as candidates to “ignore the September Effect” is an opinion piece, and historical monthly averages are no guarantee of how any individual stock or the broader market will perform in a given year.
