AI Memory Boom Puts Micron on a Collision Course With Microsoft’s Profit Machine

Micron Technology (NASDAQ:MU) has posted one of the most dramatic profit inflections in the semiconductor industry this cycle, and a new analysis argues the memory maker could out-earn Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) in fiscal 2027 — a striking reversal given where the two companies stood just a year ago.

Microsoft just wrapped up what was by many measures its strongest fiscal year ever. Revenue for fiscal 2026, which closed on June 30, climbed 18% to $331.8 billion, while net income surged 31% year over year to $133.7 billion. Those results underscore the software giant’s dominance across cloud, productivity software, and AI infrastructure.

Micron, by contrast, earned $8.5 billion in its fiscal 2025 — a fraction of Microsoft’s total. But the trajectory since then has been extraordinary. For its fiscal fourth quarter of 2026, which ended in early September, Micron management guided to GAAP earnings of $30.73 per diluted share, plus or minus $1.00. With roughly 1.15 billion diluted shares outstanding, that guidance implies approximately $35 billion in profit for a single quarter — roughly four times what the entire prior fiscal year delivered.

The surge reflects the pricing power memory manufacturers currently enjoy as data center operators race to secure high-bandwidth memory and DRAM capacity for AI systems. Micron, which operates through business units spanning cloud memory, core data center, and mobile and consumer segments, has been a direct beneficiary of that demand.

Market reaction has tracked the fundamental divergence. Micron shares rose 6.58% in recent trading to $1,016.59, up from a prior close of $953.84, valuing the company at roughly $1.15 trillion. Microsoft shares slipped 0.32% to $491.65, leaving its market capitalization at approximately $3.68 trillion — still more than three times Micron’s, but the gap in quarterly earnings momentum has narrowed sharply.

Whether Micron can sustain a quarterly profit run-rate near Microsoft’s annual figure is the central question raised by the analysis. Memory markets have historically been cyclical, with pricing and supply dynamics capable of swinging results sharply in either direction.

What to watch

  • Micron’s fiscal Q4 2026 results and whether actual GAAP earnings land within the guided $29.73–$31.73 per-share range.
  • Micron’s fiscal 2027 first-quarter guidance for signals on whether memory pricing momentum continues.
  • Microsoft’s next quarterly report and commentary on AI-driven cloud demand and capital spending.
  • Updates on DRAM and high-bandwidth memory supply agreements from major hyperscalers.
