CarPlay paired with more than one iPhone? Here’s how to pick the right one

Drivers who use two iPhones with the same car often run into a simple but confusing quirk of Apple‘s CarPlay: the system does not ask which device to use. Instead, when the car starts, CarPlay automatically reconnects to whichever iPhone was paired first, leaving the second phone sidelined even if it is the one in the driver’s pocket.

The behavior makes sense from a design standpoint — automatic reconnection keeps things hands-free — but it can frustrate households or commuters who share a vehicle and alternate between devices. Getting CarPlay to switch to the other phone requires a few manual steps rather than a settings toggle inside the car itself.

The most reliable approach is to disconnect the currently connected iPhone. That can be done by turning off CarPlay access from the phone’s settings, disabling Bluetooth on that device, or simply turning the phone off. Once the first phone is no longer available, the second iPhone can be selected from the car’s head unit as the active CarPlay source, or paired fresh if it has not yet been set up with that vehicle.

Some vehicles also let users manage paired devices directly from the infotainment screen, where the active CarPlay phone can be swapped manually. Keeping both iPhones updated to the latest version of iOS is recommended, as connection behavior has shifted across software releases.

CarPlay remains a key part of Apple’s broader consumer electronics ecosystem, which spans the iPhone, Mac, iPad, and wearables. The company’s shares closed at $336.13, unchanged on the day, with a market capitalization of roughly $4.6 trillion.

For drivers juggling two devices, the takeaway is that CarPlay’s “first paired, first connected” logic means the switch always has to start on the phone side — cutting off the active device is what hands control to the other one.
