Android users have built-in tools to silence repeat callers and texters

Unwanted calls and text messages continue to be one of the most common annoyances for smartphone users, but Android owners don’t have to put up with repeat offenders. Google’s mobile operating system includes straightforward tools for blocking numbers directly from the Phone and Messages apps, and unblocking is just as simple if a user changes their mind.

Blocking a number on Android

The most direct method works through the built-in Phone app. After opening the app’s call history or recent calls list, users can tap on the number they want to silence and select the block option from the menu. Once a number is blocked, calls and texts from that contact will no longer ring through or appear in the message inbox.

Google Messages offers a parallel process for text-based harassment: long-pressing a conversation surfaces a block option, and users can also report spam when prompted. Blocked callers are typically still able to leave voicemails, which land in a separate folder rather than triggering a notification.

Unblocking a number

Reversing a block requires a trip to the Phone app’s settings. Under the blocked-numbers section, users can review every number they’ve silenced and remove any from the list with a single tap. Numbers unblocked this way can immediately call and text as normal again.

The steps can vary slightly depending on whether a phone runs stock Android or a manufacturer skin from Samsung or another vendor, but the blocked-numbers list is consistently found within the Phone app’s settings menu.
