Semiconductor test equipment maker Aehr Test Systems is drawing attention as a niche player positioning itself around two of the chip industry’s fastest-growing demand drivers: silicon carbide power devices for electric vehicles and high-bandwidth memory used in artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Shares of Aehr traded at $93.49 in recent trading, up 3.76% from the prior close of $90.10, giving the company a market capitalization of roughly $2.6 billion. The company operates in the semiconductor equipment and materials segment of the technology sector, where it competes against far larger rivals — most notably KLA Corporation, a process control giant whose tools are used across chip fabrication lines industry-wide.
Contrasting Business Models
Aehr designs systems for testing, burn-in, and stabilization of semiconductors at multiple stages — full wafers, singulated dies, and packaged parts. Its FOX-XP and FOX-NP platforms allow wafer-level contact testing, an approach aimed at catching defects early in production. The scale difference between the two companies is substantial, and so are their risk profiles. According to a recent analysis, Aehr’s five largest customers accounted for nearly 70% of net sales in its fiscal year 2026, which ended May 29. That level of customer concentration means revenue can swing sharply if even one major buyer adjusts its capital spending — a dynamic common among small-cap equipment vendors tied to specific device categories like silicon carbide.
The AI Angle
Both companies are marketing themselves to investors through the lens of artificial intelligence, but in different ways. Aehr’s exposure runs through high-bandwidth memory, the stacked memory architecture that pairs with AI accelerators in data centers, alongside its longer-standing silicon carbide business serving electric vehicle makers. KLA, by contrast, benefits from AI demand indirectly, as chipmakers expand capacity and increase yields on advanced nodes — spending that flows into process control equipment purchases broadly.
For Aehr, the near-term question is whether demand from a concentrated customer base translates into sustained order volume, particularly as the silicon carbide market works through a period of capacity digestion among EV suppliers.
