Verizon’s 2026 Rebound Puts the Carrier Back in the Telecom Conversation

After years of sluggish performance, Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ) is showing signs of a meaningful turnaround in 2026, raising the question of whether the telecom giant has reclaimed its footing among industry peers.

For much of the past several years, Verizon struggled to keep pace with rivals in the telecom sector, with limited growth in both its operational results and its share price. That narrative has shifted under new leadership. Dan Schulman, who joined the company’s board in 2018, took over as chief executive in October 2025 and has since overseen a string of quarterly results that have outpaced analyst expectations.

The clearest evidence of the turnaround came in the second quarter of 2026, when Verizon reported 184,000 postpaid net phone additions — a sharp reversal from the subscriber losses it posted in the same period a year earlier. Postpaid phone subscribers are widely viewed as a key health metric for wireless carriers, since they tend to generate recurring, higher-value revenue than prepaid customers.

As of the latest trading session, Verizon shares stood at $50.14, down 0.67% from the prior close of $50.48, giving the company a market capitalization of roughly $195.4 billion. The stock is classified in the Communication Services sector within the Telecom Services industry.

The turnaround under Schulman is notable given his background: rather than rising through the telecom ranks, he came to the CEO role from the boardroom, bringing an outside perspective to a company that had been criticized for stagnation. The consistency of Verizon’s recent quarterly beats suggests the company has stabilized its subscriber base and improved execution in a competitive wireless market.

Whether that momentum can be sustained through the remainder of 2026 remains to be seen. Rival carriers continue to compete aggressively on pricing, promotions, and network quality, and subscriber swings in the wireless business can be volatile from quarter to quarter. Still, the contrast between Verizon’s current trajectory and its underperformance in prior years is stark.
