FAA prepares to debut $875 million AI system for air traffic management, starting over Washington, DC

The Federal Aviation Administration is preparing to put an artificial intelligence tool into the hands of air traffic controllers, with an initial deployment expected in the crowded airspace around Washington, DC, as soon as Monday, September 21, according to reporting by The Wall Street Journal.

The system, known as SMART, applies AI models to forecast air traffic flows and flag potential conflicts before they develop. It draws on operational inputs including airline schedules, weather conditions, airport capacity, and the state of the airspace itself. The planned DC-area debut would cover the region’s three major airports and would mark the first phase of an intended nationwide rollout spanning the 29 million square miles of US national airspace that the FAA oversees.

The program carries an estimated price tag of $875 million, and the federal agency’s move reflects growing interest across the aviation sector in machine learning tools to ease congestion at busy airports, where weather disruptions and capacity limits routinely cascade into delays.

Philip Mann, principal consultant at Vector Strategic Consulting LLC, who advises on aviation safety and AI governance and previously spent 17 years at the FAA in several roles, said the agency’s choice to begin with a limited deployment before expanding nationally was the “right call.”

The initiative lands as AI adoption accelerates across traditionally conservative infrastructure sectors. For companies in the applied analytics and software space — such as PDF Solutions (NASDAQ: PDFS), which provides data-driven software and services for semiconductor design and manufacturing — the trend underscores expanding demand for predictive AI tooling in complex, safety-critical operations. PDF Solutions shares recently traded at $47.15, down 1.44% from the prior close of $47.84, valuing the company at roughly $1.99 billion.

The FAA has not announced a firm timeline for the full national rollout, and the DC deployment will serve as an early test of how controllers interact with AI-generated predictions in live operations.

What to watch

  • Confirmation of the SMART launch at the three Washington, DC-area airports and early operational feedback from controllers.
  • FAA announcements on milestones toward the nationwide rollout across US national airspace.
  • Follow-on contract awards or budget disclosures related to the FAA’s AI modernization efforts.
  • Broader adoption of AI decision-support tools across the aviation and infrastructure software market.
