Days after an Anthropic researcher’s stark warning about catastrophic AI risk set off debate across the industry, Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei has laid out his own framework for slowing frontier AI development — a proposal he has framed as “pacing the frontier.”

The plan, described in remarks covered by TechCrunch, centers on two pillars: independent safety evaluators who would assess frontier AI systems, and coordination among AI laboratories based in democratic countries. The idea is that shared evaluation standards and alignment among like-minded labs could slow the most dangerous race dynamics without abandoning progress entirely.

The proposal has already drawn a mixed reception. Some figures in the AI industry have signaled support for the approach, viewing external evaluation and cross-lab coordination as practical steps toward managing frontier-model risk. But it has also met pointed skepticism from NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang, whose company sits at the center of the AI compute build-out. NVIDIA, which operates as a data center scale AI infrastructure company across the United States, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Europe and other markets through its Compute & Networking and Graphics segments, has a direct commercial stake in how quickly AI development proceeds.

NVIDIA shares were trading at $223.67 in recent activity, down 0.73% from the previous close of $225.31, giving the company a market capitalization of approximately $5.56 trillion. The chipmaker’s market position makes Huang one of the most prominent voices in the debate over whether — and how — frontier AI labs should throttle their own pace of development.

The exchange highlights a widening fault line in the AI sector. On one side, safety-focused labs such as Anthropic argue that voluntary coordination and third-party evaluation can head off worst-case outcomes. On the other, hardware and infrastructure players tend to view accelerating AI capability as both an economic engine and, in Huang’s framing, a broader benefit that coordination schemes could constrain. Whether labs in democratic countries can realistically sustain a coordinated pace — and whether evaluators can keep up with rapidly advancing systems — remains an open question.
