Tesla Teams Up With Forum Mobility to Build Heavy-Duty Charging Network Across California

Tesla has entered into a partnership with Forum Mobility to develop charging infrastructure for electric trucks at sites across California, a move that extends the automaker’s energy business deeper into commercial freight electrification.

The collaboration will focus on depot and corridor charging for Class 8 trucks, an area where Forum Mobility has been working to electrify drayage operations around the state’s busiest ports. California has been among the most aggressive markets for zero-emission trucking mandates, making it a logical proving ground for fleet charging buildouts.

For Tesla, the deal signals a growing push beyond passenger vehicles. The company’s energy generation and storage segment — which includes charging hardware, batteries, and grid services — has increasingly been positioned as a complement to its automotive business, and commercial trucking represents a large, largely untapped pool of electricity demand.

Market reaction to the announcement was overshadowed by broader trading pressure. Tesla shares closed at $354.08, down 5.49% from the previous close of $374.64, valuing the company at roughly $1.23 trillion. The stock’s decline reflected a difficult session for the automaker rather than any company-specific disclosure.

The freight sector poses distinct engineering and financial challenges compared with consumer charging. Heavy-duty trucks require high-power dispensers, on-site battery storage to manage utility demand charges, and long-term site commitments — capital-intensive requirements that have slowed fleet electrification nationwide. Partnerships pairing vehicle makers with charging developers are becoming a common way to share that burden.

Forum Mobility, a California-based fleet electrification company, has emphasized depot electrification and charging-as-a-service models for drayage truckers operating near Oakland, Long Beach, and other port corridors. Tesla’s involvement suggests its charging and storage technology will be integrated into those projects.

The announcement lands as Tesla continues to diversify revenue streams amid intensifying competition in the EV market. Commercial charging, if scaled, could provide recurring energy revenue while reinforcing the company’s Supercharging and storage ecosystem.

What to watch

  • Details on the number of sites, megawatt capacity, and project timelines, which were not disclosed in the initial announcement.
  • Regulatory developments in California affecting heavy-duty zero-emission truck requirements, which would shape fleet demand.
  • Tesla’s next quarterly earnings report, for updates on energy segment growth and any commercial charging revenue commentary.
