Micron Shares Climb as Intel Flags Deepening Memory Supply Crunch

Shares of Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU) closed up 6.58% at $1,016.59 on Thursday, building on momentum from earlier in the week after Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) leadership raised alarms about tightening memory supply across the semiconductor industry.

The rally came after Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan, speaking at a conference on Sept. 15, cautioned that memory production capacity remains severely constrained and is likely to deteriorate further in the coming year. For Micron — one of the world’s largest producers of DRAM and NAND memory — warnings of sustained scarcity underscore the pricing leverage memory makers could hold as demand from data centers and AI infrastructure continues to absorb available supply.

Micron, which operates through business units spanning cloud memory, core data center, and mobile products, has been a direct beneficiary of the supply-demand imbalance in recent quarters. Intel’s comments appear to have reinforced investor expectations that tightness could extend well into next year.

Intel’s own stock also participated in the broader move, gaining 4.72% to close at $95.80. The chipmaker, which designs computing products across client, data center, and foundry segments, is among the memory shortage’s most exposed customers, since constrained memory supply raises input costs and complicates product roadmaps for PC and server platforms.

The gains came against a supportive backdrop for technology shares broadly. The S&P 500 rose 1.1% and the Nasdaq Composite climbed 1.7% on the session, lifting sentiment across the semiconductor group.

Micron’s advance left the company with a market capitalization of roughly $1.15 trillion, while Intel’s closed the day near $423 billion — a snapshot of the valuation gap that has opened between memory producers riding the shortage and chip designers absorbing its cost effects.

What to watch

  • Micron’s upcoming quarterly earnings report and any updates to its memory pricing and capacity outlook.
  • Further public comments from Intel executives on memory availability and its impact on product timelines heading into next year.
  • Industry forecasts for DRAM and NAND supply, particularly capacity additions from memory manufacturers in 2027.
  • Broader semiconductor sector performance as hyperscaler demand signals emerge from cloud earnings season.
