Mastercard taps Alchemy to bring agentic AI shopping to its payments network

Mastercard has announced a partnership with web3 infrastructure firm Alchemy to enable agentic shopping — purchases initiated and completed by AI agents on behalf of consumers — across its payments network. The move extends the payments company’s push to position its rails as a foundation for a new class of automated, AI-driven commerce.

Under the collaboration, developers building AI agents on Alchemy’s platform will be able to integrate Mastercard’s payment credentials and authentication tools, allowing autonomous software to transact within defined user permissions. The arrangement addresses one of the central challenges in agentic commerce: verifying that an AI agent is authorized to spend on a user’s behalf, and ensuring merchants can trust those transactions.

The partnership builds on Mastercard’s broader agentic payments work, which includes frameworks for agent authentication and transaction tokenization. Rival card networks and payment providers have been racing to establish standards for machine-initiated purchases as AI assistants move from answering questions to executing tasks such as booking travel or replenishing household goods.

For Alchemy, which provides developer infrastructure used by blockchain and AI application teams, the deal offers a bridge between emerging agent frameworks and a mainstream payments network with global merchant acceptance. For Mastercard, it opens a distribution channel to developers who may otherwise default to alternative payment methods in agent-native environments.

Shares of Mastercard Incorporated traded at $579.21, down 1.09% from the prior close of $585.59, giving the Purchase, New York-based company a market capitalization of roughly $498.3 billion. Mastercard operates in the financial services sector, specifically credit services, and describes itself as a technology company providing transaction processing and payment-related products to financial institutions, merchants, and digital partners worldwide.

The announcement lands as card networks increasingly view agentic commerce as a potential transaction volume driver, provided security and consumer trust questions can be resolved. Industry efforts to standardize agent-to-merchant interactions remain early, and adoption will depend on merchants, issuers, and AI platforms aligning on shared protocols.

What to watch

  • Mastercard’s upcoming quarterly earnings report, where management may outline agentic commerce initiatives and monetization plans.
  • Additional agent-payment partnerships or standards announcements from Mastercard and competing card networks.
  • Developer adoption metrics for Alchemy’s agent tooling following the integration’s rollout.
