Lucid Teams With Ride-Hailing Firm Bolt on Ambitious European Robotaxi Rollout

Electric vehicle maker Lucid Group and European ride-hailing platform Bolt have announced plans to put at least 25,000 autonomous vehicles on the road across Europe, a partnership that would mark one of the largest robotaxi deployments announced to date outside the United States and China.

The plan pairs Lucid’s electric vehicle hardware with Bolt’s ride-hailing network, which operates across dozens of European countries. While the announcement outlines a scale of deployment few rivals have committed to, the companies have not detailed a firm timeline for reaching that figure, leaving open questions about regulatory approvals, vehicle certification, and the pace of autonomous driving technology maturation in European markets.

For Lucid, the deal represents a potential high-volume order for its vehicles at a time when the company is working to scale production. The California-based automaker, best known for its Lucid Air sedan and Gravity SUV, has positioned itself as a technology company as much as a vehicle manufacturer, developing its own software and powertrain systems in-house — capabilities that could prove central to any robotaxi program.

The announcement comes as Lucid’s stock trades at $4.68, up 1.08% from the previous close of $4.63, valuing the company at roughly $3.17 billion. Operating in the competitive auto manufacturing sector, the company has faced pressure to demonstrate a path to profitability as it ramps output of its luxury EV lineup.

Bolt, meanwhile, gains a route into the autonomous mobility race, an area where European players have generally lagged behind US operators like Waymo and a wave of Chinese robotaxi services. Europe’s patchwork of national regulations on self-driving vehicles remains a significant hurdle for any large-scale deployment, and approvals are likely to arrive market by market rather than continent-wide.

The robotaxi market has attracted intensifying investment in recent years, with automakers and tech companies alike betting that autonomous ride services could eventually generate recurring revenue beyond one-time vehicle sales. A deployment of 25,000 or more vehicles would put the Lucid-Bolt partnership among the larger announced fleets globally, though announcements of this scale have historically taken years to materialize, if they materialize at all.

Neither company’s release specified which Lucid vehicle models would serve as the robotaxi platform or which European cities would see service first.

What to watch

  • Details on deployment timeline, target cities, and which vehicle platform will underpin the robotaxi fleet
  • Regulatory approvals for autonomous testing and commercial operation in individual European markets
  • Lucid’s upcoming quarterly earnings, including production and delivery figures
  • Progress updates from Bolt on pilot programs or initial autonomous launches
