Coherent Broadens Pluggable Optical Line System Aimed at AI Data Center Networks

Coherent (COHR) has announced an expansion of its pluggable optical line system portfolio, a move designed to address the surging bandwidth demands of artificial intelligence infrastructure inside modern data centers.

Pluggable optical line systems sit at the heart of high-speed fiber interconnects, allowing operators to scale capacity between data centers and across campus networks without building out bespoke transport hardware. As AI clusters grow to span multiple buildings and sites, the traffic between them increasingly requires coherent optics that can push more data over existing fiber pairs — an area where Coherent has been investing heavily.

The company said the expanded line-up gives network operators more flexibility in deploying point-to-point and campus interconnect links, with a focus on the high-density requirements typical of AI training environments. Rather than relying on standalone transport equipment, pluggable modules can slot directly into switches and routers, simplifying deployments and reducing the footprint and power overhead traditionally associated with optical transport.

The announcement lands amid rapid buildouts of AI accelerator fleets by hyperscale cloud providers, which have driven strong demand for optical components spanning transceivers, amplifiers, and line-system gear. Coherent, whose portfolio spans photonics and compound semiconductors, has positioned itself as a supplier across that stack, and the company framed the latest release as extending its reach into the networking layer of AI deployments.

Shares of Coherent closed at $288.25, up 6.27% from the prior close of $271.25, valuing the company at roughly $56.4 billion. The move in the stock reflects broader investor attention on optical networking suppliers tied to AI infrastructure spending.
