Nvidia Moves to Buy Hugging Face in a Deal Extending Its Reach Beyond AI Chips

Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) has agreed to acquire Hugging Face, the platform widely used by developers to share and deploy open-source AI models, in a transaction valued at $11.9 billion for shareholders, plus as much as $1 billion in equity awards for Hugging Face employees who will join Nvidia.

The deal, announced Sept. 2, is expected to close in the first half of 2027, pending regulatory approvals. Nvidia, whose shares traded at $223.67 on the day, down 0.73% from a prior close of $225.31, carries a market capitalization of roughly $5.56 trillion. The company describes itself as a data-center-scale AI infrastructure company, operating across the United States, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Europe, and other international markets through its Compute & Networking and Graphics segments.

Nvidia has long been the leading supplier of the GPUs used to train and run large AI models. The Hugging Face acquisition signals an effort to strengthen its position further up the stack — in the layer where developers discover, select, and deploy the models that run on that hardware. Hugging Face’s hub has become a default destination for the open-model ecosystem, making it a strategic asset for a company whose data center business depends on sustained AI development activity.

If the acquisition clears regulators, Nvidia would control both a dominant share of AI compute infrastructure and one of the most heavily trafficked distribution points for AI models — a combination that could draw scrutiny from antitrust authorities in the United States and abroad. The long runway to a 2027 close suggests the companies are preparing for an extended review period.

What to watch

  • Regulatory review timelines in the U.S., EU, and other jurisdictions ahead of the anticipated first-half 2027 close.
  • Nvidia’s next quarterly earnings report, including data center revenue trends and any commentary on the acquisition.
  • Details on how Nvidia plans to integrate Hugging Face’s platform with its software stack and enterprise offerings.
  • Responses from hyperscale cloud providers and AI model developers, who may adjust platform strategies in light of the deal.
