Bloom Energy Set to Enter the S&P 500 Ahead of Sept. 21 Debut

Fuel cell maker Bloom Energy (NYSE:BE) will officially join the S&P 500 before the market opens on Monday, Sept. 21, according to an announcement from S&P Dow Jones Indices made earlier this month.

The index inclusion marks a milestone in a remarkable stretch for the San Jose-based company, which builds solid oxide fuel cell systems that generate electricity on-site for data centers and other large-scale power consumers. Demand for such distributed power solutions has surged alongside the rapid expansion of AI-driven data center construction, and Bloom’s shares have roughly tripled in 2026 so far.

The stock has not been immune to volatility. Bloom shares dipped nearly 7% on Monday as part of a wider pullback in companies tied to the artificial intelligence trade, but they remain well above their levels at the start of the year. As of the latest session, the stock changed hands at $259.35, up 0.41% from the prior close of $258.30, giving the company a market capitalization of roughly $60.6 billion. That price sits about 25% below the stock’s 52-week high of $351.28.

Why index inclusion matters

Addition to the S&P 500 typically brings a company to the attention of a much broader pool of investors. Index funds and exchange-traded funds that track the benchmark are generally required to purchase shares of newly added constituents, which can increase trading volume and liquidity in the stock. Bloom Energy, classified in the industrials sector within the electrical equipment and parts industry, will now be part of the same index as many of the largest U.S. companies.

Bloom’s Energy Server platform converts fuels such as natural gas, biogas, and hydrogen into electricity at the point of use, an increasingly popular model for data center operators seeking reliable power without waiting years for grid connections.

What to watch

  • Trading activity around Bloom’s Sept. 21 index entry, including flows from funds that track the S&P 500.
  • Bloom’s next quarterly earnings report and any updates to revenue guidance tied to data center demand.
  • Broader movements in AI-linked stocks, which have shown heightened volatility in recent sessions.
  • Any announcements of new customer agreements or capacity expansion from the company.
