Advanced Nuclear Developer Oklo Draws Attention as Potential AI-Era Power Play

A new commentary arguing that the current bull market’s defining stock may not be a chipmaker has turned the spotlight on Oklo Inc., the advanced fission power developer whose Aurora Powerhouse reactors are designed to deliver between 15 and 75 megawatts of electricity — capacity aimed squarely at the energy-hungry data centers driving the artificial intelligence buildout.

The thesis, laid out in a Motley Fool analysis, frames market history through a series of “signature” stocks: Microsoft embodying the 1990s PC revolution, Cisco the dot-com boom, Apple the smartphone era of the early 2010s, Tesla the post-pandemic years, and Nvidia as the avatar of the current AI cycle. The author contends that while Nvidia’s roughly 146-fold gain over the past decade made it the world’s most valuable company by market capitalization, the next ten years could belong to a different kind of company — one that supplies the electricity AI infrastructure requires.

Oklo fits that narrative as an independent power producer commercializing small fission plants, along with nuclear fuel recycling and fuel fabrication capabilities. Investors appeared to embrace the framing: shares of Oklo rose 3.33% in Tuesday trading to $41.27, up from a prior close of $39.94. Its market capitalization stands at roughly $6.76 billion — a fraction of Nvidia’s $5.56 trillion.

The contrast in scale underscores the speculative nature of the comparison. Nvidia, which operates as a data center-scale AI infrastructure company, slipped 0.73% to $223.67. Meanwhile, the mega-cap names cited as prior era-defining stocks mostly traded narrowly: Apple gained 0.08% to $332.27, Microsoft slipped 0.32% to $491.65, and Cisco added 0.43% to $110.68. Tesla was the notable mover among them, falling 5.49% to $354.08.

The argument reflects a broader debate over whether AI’s bottlenecks will shift from compute to power. Data center electricity demand has become a central theme for utilities and energy developers positioning to serve hyperscale customers, and advanced nuclear has emerged as one of the most closely watched potential solutions.

What to watch

  • Oklo’s progress on regulatory approvals and deployment timelines for its Aurora Powerhouse reactors.
  • Announcements of power purchase agreements with data center or AI operators.
  • Nvidia’s upcoming earnings and any commentary on data center power constraints.
  • Developments in Oklo’s nuclear fuel recycling and fuel fabrication commercialization efforts.
