NuScale Power Nears Potential Landmark Agreement With Tennessee Valley Authority
NuScale Power (NYSE: SMR) may be approaching a pivotal moment for the small modular reactor (SMR) sector. On the company’s second-quarter earnings call held Aug. 5, management indicated that discussions toward a major nuclear energy agreement with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) are advancing toward final stages.
A deal of that scale could carry broad implications for the SMR industry, which aims to make nuclear generation more affordable, adaptable, and scalable than conventional large reactors. The TVA talks come as electricity demand climbs rapidly, driven largely by the expansion of AI data centers that require dense, reliable power supplies.
NuScale occupies a distinctive position in the market: it is currently the only company whose small modular reactor design has received approval from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The company’s core product, the NuScale Power Module, is a light water reactor capable of generating 77 megawatts of electricity, and the firm also supplies design and nuclear regulatory licensing documentation to support deployment.
The central question facing the company is whether its technology can move from promising on paper to proven in commercial operation. A completed agreement with the TVA would represent a significant step in that transition, potentially validating NuScale’s approach at utility scale and setting a benchmark for competitors still working through the regulatory process.
Shares of NuScale closed at $9.77 previously and were trading at $9.70, down 0.72% on the day, giving the company a market capitalization of roughly $2.98 billion. The stock’s performance reflects ongoing uncertainty about the pace of commercialization in the SMR sector, even as interest in nuclear power grows among technology companies seeking energy for their data center buildouts.
NuScale is classified within the industrials sector under the specialty industrial machinery industry category.
