Memory Chip Rally Puts Micron and Sandisk in the Spotlight as AI Investors Hunt the Next Bottleneck

Two of the year’s defining AI trade names are memory chipmakers, not GPU designers. Micron Technology rose 6.58% in Monday trading to $1,016.59, valuing the semiconductor company at roughly $1.15 trillion. Sandisk, which builds NAND flash storage products including solid-state drives, climbed 12.3% to $1,740.00, giving it a market capitalization near $186.4 billion.

The moves reflect a broader rotation in AI-related investing. As data center operators pour capital into accelerators, attention has shifted toward the components that feed those chips — high-bandwidth memory and fast storage. Memory suppliers, once seen as commodity players, have become central to the AI infrastructure story, and the market has re-rated them accordingly over the past year.

The search for the next bottleneck

With Micron and Sandisk shares having delivered outsized gains to early investors, commentary across the sector is now focused on which part of the AI buildout becomes constrained next. Analysts and market commentators have floated candidates ranging from networking and power equipment to advanced packaging and optical components — areas where supply has historically lagged demand during infrastructure buildouts.

A recent commentary piece argued that three unnamed stocks could outperform the memory giants as new bottlenecks emerge, though it did not identify the companies in its preview. The thesis rests on the idea that each phase of AI capex spending tends to concentrate gains in whichever layer of the stack is scarcest, from logic chips to memory to the systems that connect and cool them.

For now, the memory rally remains the clearest expression of that pattern. Micron’s trillion-plus-dollar valuation and Sandisk’s double-digit session gain underscore how quickly investor sentiment can reprice hardware suppliers once they’re seen as indispensable to AI deployments.

What to watch

  • Micron and Sandisk’s next quarterly earnings reports, including data center revenue breakdowns and memory pricing commentary.
  • Hyperscaler capital expenditure guidance, which drives demand forecasts for memory and storage.
  • Any announcements of long-term supply agreements between memory makers and AI chip or cloud customers.
  • New commentary identifying which component categories — networking, power, packaging — become the next supply constraint.
