Wolfe Research Flags Satellite Rivals and DSL Withdrawal as Pressures on Charter and Comcast

A new note from Wolfe Research points to two converging forces weighing on the broadband businesses of the largest U.S. cable operators: rising competition from satellite internet providers and the gradual retirement of legacy DSL networks by telephone companies.

The research firm argues that low-earth-orbit satellite services, led by SpaceX’s Starlink, are increasingly capturing households outside the reach of cable plant — and, in some cases, chipping away at customers inside cable footprints as well. At the same time, as legacy telcos wind down aging copper DSL lines, some of those subscribers are migrating to satellite or fixed wireless alternatives rather than switching to cable, shrinking a pool of potential converts that cable operators have historically relied on for growth.

The dynamics matter for both Comcast and Charter Communications, whose broadband franchises have anchored their connectivity segments. Comcast, classified in the Communication Services sector within Telecom Services, saw its shares trade at $25.34, up 0.72% from the previous close of $25.16, valuing the company at roughly $84.0 billion.

The DSL sunsetting point is notable because for years, cable’s broadband subscriber gains were fueled in part by customers abandoning slow telephone-company internet service. If those households now have credible satellite or fixed wireless options, the industry’s addressable growth shrinks. Meanwhile, satellite providers continue to lower hardware costs and expand capacity, extending their competitive reach.

Neither company’s broadband strategy is standing still. Comcast has emphasized pricing and bundling levers, including multi-year price locks and converged mobile offerings, while Charter has pursued similar retention tactics alongside its rural expansion buildouts subsidized by government programs. Both operators also lean on converged wireless-broadband packages to reduce churn.

The Wolfe Research analysis arrives amid a broader reset in U.S. broadband, where post-pandemic subscriber surges have cooled and newer entrants — fixed wireless access from the national carriers in particular — have taken an outsize share of net additions.

What to watch

  • Upcoming quarterly earnings reports from Comcast and Charter for broadband net addition trends and churn commentary
  • Management guidance on pricing, bundles, and rural expansion programs
  • Capacity and pricing updates from satellite internet providers serving U.S. households
  • Milestones in telco copper/DSL retirement plans and where displaced customers land
