Wall Street Slides at Midday as Semiconductor Names Weigh on Sentiment

Equity markets turned lower to start the week, with all three major indexes retreating in Monday midday trading after closing out the prior week with gains. The pullback comes as investors digest weekend developments that appear to have landed poorly for the semiconductor sector, a key driver of market momentum in recent months.

By shortly after noon ET, the Nasdaq Composite and the S&P 500 were each down 0.4%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average was off by a more modest 0.1%. The session has been choppy: the Nasdaq had fallen as much as 1.3% earlier in the day before trimming its losses heading into the lunch hour, suggesting some buyers stepped in during the morning slide.

The tech-heavy composition of Monday’s declines fits the pattern. Among the large-cap names under pressure, NVIDIA shares were down 0.73% at $223.67, moving below their previous close of $225.31. The chipmaker, which now operates as a data center-scale AI infrastructure company serving customers across the United States, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Europe and beyond, carries a market capitalization of roughly $5.56 trillion — making its day-to-day swings a meaningful factor in index performance.

Software was not immune to the soft tape either. Microsoft slipped 0.32% to $491.65, down from a prior close of $493.25. The software infrastructure giant, whose market cap stands at approximately $3.71 trillion, has been a central player in the AI buildout narrative that has helped propel indexes higher over the past two years, so its direction often moves in tandem with the semiconductor complex.

The intraday recovery from the lows may offer some reassurance to market watchers, though the underlying catalysts remain front and center. Weekend news flows have increasingly become a source of Monday volatility for chip stocks, given the sector’s sensitivity to export policy shifts, supply chain updates, and geopolitical headlines involving key manufacturing and customer regions such as Taiwan and China.

Traders will be looking to see whether the morning bounce holds into the close, or whether renewed selling pressure re-emerges in the afternoon session — a dynamic that has characterized several recent trading days.

What to watch

  • Whether the major indexes recover further or extend losses into the closing bell.
  • Upcoming quarterly earnings from major semiconductor and software companies, including guidance on AI infrastructure demand.
  • Any follow-through on weekend policy or geopolitical developments affecting chip supply chains.
  • Macro data and Federal Reserve commentary that could shape rate expectations in the sessions ahead.
