Tesla Targets 2027 for First Commercial Humanoid Robot Deliveries, Musk Says

Elon Musk has told attendees at the World Economic Forum in Davos that Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) could begin shipping its first commercial Optimus humanoid robots to customers by 2027, putting a rough timeline on a program the company first teased nearly six years ago.

Tesla unveiled the Optimus concept in 2021 with a performer in a bodysuit rather than a working machine, and followed up a year later with a functional prototype designed to take on tasks the company describes as unsafe, repetitive, or tedious for human workers. The 2027 target marks the first time the program has been tied to a concrete commercial shipping date.

A diversification test for the EV maker

The robotics push comes at a notable moment for Tesla. Shares closed the prior session at $374.64 and are trading down 5.49% today at $354.08, valuing the company at roughly $1.23 trillion. Despite that market capitalization, Tesla’s reported revenue remains overwhelmingly tied to its automotive and energy segments, and investors have long debated how much of the company’s valuation reflects future businesses like robotics and autonomy rather than current vehicle sales.

Musk has previously framed Optimus as a potential large-scale product line, but the company has not disclosed pricing, production volumes, or expected revenue contributions for the robot. That means any estimate of what commercial shipments could add to Tesla’s top line remains speculative until the company provides order figures, unit economics, or guidance tied to the program.

Questions also remain about manufacturing readiness. Tesla plans to leverage the same automation and AI expertise it uses in vehicle production, but scaling a humanoid robot from prototype to mass manufacturing by 2027 would be an ambitious cadence, particularly given that the program has already evolved substantially since its theatrical debut.

What to watch

  • Whether Tesla provides Optimus pricing, production targets, or reservation details in upcoming shareholder communications or earnings calls.
  • Progress updates on Optimus hardware and AI capability demonstrations between now and the 2027 shipping window.
  • Tesla’s quarterly results and any commentary on how robotics fits into its long-term segment reporting.
