Apple Music’s lossless streaming comes with a heavier data bill

Apple Music’s lossless streaming comes with a heavier data bill

Subscribers to Apple Music who want the highest-fidelity listening experience have two lossless tiers available, but both come at a meaningful cost to mobile data consumption compared with standard streaming quality.

Lossless audio preserves more of the original recording than compressed formats, which strip out data to reduce file sizes. That fidelity gain, however, translates directly into larger streams — meaning listeners who stream over cellular connections can expect their monthly data allowances to disappear faster than they would with the service’s default quality settings.

The two-tier structure gives listeners some flexibility. Apple Music’s standard lossless option sits at the base of its high-quality lineup, while a higher-resolution tier pushes quality further — and pushes data usage higher along with it. Users can choose their playback quality separately for Wi-Fi and cellular connections in the app’s settings, a distinction that matters for anyone trying to balance sound quality against a capped data plan.

For Apple, audio quality has been one of the differentiators in a crowded subscription streaming market where monthly prices are broadly similar across major services. The company has positioned lossless playback as a feature included at no extra cost, rather than a premium upsell, as it continues to deepen the services segment that supplements its hardware business.

Apple shares traded at $333.08 in recent activity, up 0.16% from a previous close of $332.55, giving the consumer electronics giant a market capitalization of roughly $4.6 trillion.

The trade-off between audio fidelity and data consumption is a familiar one across the streaming industry. As lossless offerings become table stakes among major music platforms, the practical question for subscribers is less about whether the feature exists and more about when — and on which connection — they choose to enable it.
