Small-Cap Growth Stories in Focus: Oklo, NuScale and Deep-Sea Mining Upstart TMC

Every generation of investors searches for the next breakout company — the kind of early-stage bet that eventually compounds into a giant like Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) or Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL). The catch, of course, is that for every company that scales into a technology titan, many more stall out or disappear entirely. That tension is on display in three small-cap names that have drawn attention recently: nuclear developers Oklo (NYSE: OKLO) and NuScale Power (NYSE: SMR), and deep-sea mining venture TMC The Metals Company (NASDAQ: TMC).

Nuclear newcomers with different approaches

Oklo is developing compact fission power plants, including its Aurora Powerhouse, which is designed to generate between 15 and 75 megawatts of electricity. The company is also working on nuclear fuel recycling and related fuel fabrication capabilities. In Friday trading, Oklo shares traded at $41.27, up 3.33% from the prior close of $39.94, putting its market capitalization at roughly $6.76 billion.

NuScale Power, by contrast, is pursuing small modular reactor technology based on light-water designs. Its NuScale Power Module is rated to produce 77 megawatts of electricity, and the company also provides design and licensing support for nuclear regulatory approvals. Its stock traded at $9.70, down 0.72% from a previous close of $9.77, for a market cap of approximately $2.98 billion.

Both companies are operating in a sector that has attracted renewed interest as data-center electricity demand grows, though commercializing new nuclear technology involves long development timelines and regulatory hurdles.

The deep-sea wildcard

TMC The Metals Company sits outside the nuclear story entirely. The company aims to extract polymetallic nodules from the ocean floor, applying new technology to the notoriously capital-intensive mining industry. Deep-sea extraction remains unproven at commercial scale and faces both environmental scrutiny and regulatory uncertainty, which analysts often cite as among the steepest hurdles of the three companies profiled.

The broader backdrop

For scale, the established players these smaller companies are often measured against operate in a different league entirely: Apple holds a market capitalization of about $4.6 trillion with shares at $332.27, up 1.99% recently, while Microsoft’s market cap stands near $3.71 trillion with shares at $491.65, down 0.32%. The gap illustrates how rare it is for a speculative start-up to mature into a mega-cap franchise.
