Lessons From Tesla’s Playbook Shape the Rivian–Lucid Debate

A recent commentary comparing EV makers Lucid Group (NASDAQ: LCID) and Rivian has drawn on the earliest days of Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) as a benchmark for how electric vehicle startups can grow into dominant businesses.

The analysis points to the strategy Tesla chief executive Elon Musk laid out in a 2006 blog post, in which the company’s plan began with a high-end sports car, moved into a more affordable luxury sedan, and ultimately targeted a mass-market vehicle. Tesla followed that sequence with the roughly $100,000 Roadster in 2008, the Model S at around $60,000 in 2012, and the $35,000 Model 3 in 2017 — a progression that took longer than originally planned but ultimately produced the world’s largest EV maker.

That framework — premium vehicles first, then scale downward — is now frequently applied when evaluating newer EV entrants. Lucid, which develops the Air sedan and the Gravity SUV alongside its own powertrains, battery systems, and in-house vehicle software, sits at a market capitalization of roughly $3.17 billion. Its shares closed at $4.68, up 1.08% on the day from a previous close of $4.63.

Tesla, by contrast, trades at a market cap of approximately $1.23 trillion. Its stock closed at $354.08, down 5.49% on the day from a prior close of $374.64 — a reminder that even the sector’s incumbent sees significant daily price movement. Tesla’s scale, capital, and brand strength have allowed it to expand beyond passenger cars into robotaxis and autonomous trucking ventures.

The comparison between Rivian and Lucid comes down to which company is better positioned to replicate the kind of staged scaling Tesla executed — moving from expensive flagship vehicles toward volume production while burning manageable amounts of capital along the way. Lucid’s in-house software development and its expansion from a single sedan into a second body style with the Gravity SUV fit the early chapters of that template, though the company remains far smaller than the incumbent it is often measured against.

The original commentary, published by The Motley Fool, frames the two companies as alternative ways to bet on the next phase of EV industry consolidation.
