Intel Extends Rally as Reports Point to Another Round of CPU Price Increases
Intel shares continued their remarkable run this week, rising 4.72% to $95.80 after multiple outlets, including DigiTimes, reported that the chipmaker plans to raise prices on some of its central processing units by 10% in October.
The reported increase would be the third pricing action attributed to the company this year. According to the report, Intel raised prices on certain products in the first quarter and again in July. Rival Qualcomm also implemented a double-digit price increase in July, suggesting pricing pressure may be building across parts of the semiconductor industry.
A Standout Year for the Stock
Intel has been among the best-performing technology stocks of the year, with a gain of 188% year to date and a return of 335% over the trailing twelve months, according to figures cited in the report. The company’s market capitalization stands at roughly $423 billion, placing it among the larger players in the semiconductors industry.
Qualcomm, by comparison, has seen a much quieter session, with shares up 0.12% at $168.74 and a market cap of about $164 billion. The San Diego–based company, which develops wireless technologies through its QCT, QTL, and Qualcomm Strategic Initiatives segments, has historically competed with Intel in different pockets of the computing and connectivity markets.
Why CPU Pricing Matters
Price increases on processors can signal tight supply, strong demand, or both. Repeated hikes across a single year are unusual in the PC processor market, where competition has historically kept pricing in check. If the October increases take effect as reported, they would affect client computing products across Intel’s CCG segment, which serves desktop and notebook PC makers.
Separately, storage hardware has also seen sharp moves, with Sandisk, the NAND flash specialist whose products include solid-state drives for PCs and gaming consoles, up 12.3% today at $1,740.00 — a reminder that pricing dynamics are shifting across multiple hardware categories.
Investors and industry watchers will be looking for confirmation of the reported price changes directly from Intel, which has not been detailed in a formal company announcement.
