Apple Reportedly Preparing Foldable iPhone, a Move That Could Reshape the Market
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple is working on a foldable iPhone, a long-rumored device that, if it arrives, could push foldable handsets from a niche category into the mainstream. According to the report, the entry of the world’s largest smartphone maker could make the clamshell-style form factor “the new normal” for premium devices.
Apple has so far stayed on the sidelines while competitors including Samsung have shipped foldable phones for several generations. A foldable iPhone would mark Apple’s first major change to the iPhone’s basic design since the line debuted, and its scale alone could accelerate supplier investment in flexible displays and hinges across the industry.
Shares of Apple Inc. traded at $332.27, up 1.99% from the previous close of $325.80, giving the company a market capitalization of roughly $4.6 trillion. The Cupertino-based company designs and sells the iPhone alongside Mac computers, iPads, and a range of wearables and accessories worldwide.
The report did not attach a firm launch date, and Apple has not confirmed any foldable product plans. Past Apple product categories — from the Apple Watch to the Vision Pro headset — have shown the company’s pattern of entering established markets later than rivals, then leaning on hardware integration and its ecosystem to compete.
What to watch
- Any confirmation from Apple or further details from supply-chain analysts on display and hinge suppliers.
- Apple’s next earnings call for commentary on new product categories and roadmap timing.
- Competitor foldable launches and pricing moves as the category evolves ahead of a possible Apple entry.
