Apple Reportedly Developing iPhone Gaming Controllers, Possibly With a Beats Twist

Apple may be preparing to make a bigger push into mobile gaming hardware. According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, the company is working on two game controllers designed for the iPhone, and one version could carry the Beats brand, Apple’s audio subsidiary.

If accurate, the move would represent Apple’s most direct entry into the dedicated mobile gaming accessory space to date. While the iPhone has long served as a platform for a vast library of games, Apple has largely left controller hardware to third-party makers such as Backbone and Razer, whose clip-on peripherals attach to smartphones to deliver console-style inputs.

Building two distinct controllers suggests Apple may be targeting different segments of the market — for example, a premium model under the main Apple brand and a more casual or youth-oriented option under Beats, which has historically served as the company’s lifestyle-focused consumer brand. A Beats-branded gaming peripheral would echo the company’s broader strategy of extending its sub-brands into new product categories.

The news arrives as Apple continues to emphasize gaming across its ecosystem. The company has invested in Apple Arcade, its subscription game service, and in recent years has highlighted the gaming capabilities of its custom silicon, particularly in iPhone and Apple TV marketing. A first-party controller would give Apple a tighter integration between hardware and software than third-party accessories can offer.

Investor attention on Apple’s hardware pipeline remains high. Shares of Apple closed at $332.27, up 1.99% from the prior close of $325.80, valuing the consumer electronics giant at roughly $4.6 trillion.

Neither Apple nor Beats has confirmed the controllers’ existence, and details such as pricing, release timing, and platform compatibility have not been disclosed. As with all reporting based on supply chain and insider sources, the final product lineup could change before any official announcement.

What to watch

  • An official Apple or Beats announcement confirming the controllers and their feature set
  • Details on pricing, release dates, and whether the accessories tie into Apple Arcade
  • Apple’s next earnings report and any commentary on services and accessories revenue
  • Responses from established mobile gaming controller makers in the aftermarket accessory space
