Apple Enters the Foldable Market With the iPhone Duo

Apple used its “Surprise and Shine” event on Sept. 9 to unveil its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, marking the company’s long-awaited entry into a product category that rivals have been developing for years.

Foldables have been around since 2018, when Chinese display maker Royole shipped the FlexPai, the first foldable phone. Samsung Electronics followed in 2019 with the Galaxy Fold, which brought the form factor to a mainstream audience. Despite the early start, foldables have struggled to gain broad adoption, remaining a niche segment of the global smartphone market.

Apple has often taken a similar “not first, but refined” approach in past categories, and it is betting that the Duo can do for foldables what previous iPhone generations did for smartphones more broadly. The company’s track record of polishing existing technology into mass-market products is central to the pitch behind its first bendable device.

September has traditionally been Apple’s showcase month for new iPhones and related hardware, and this year’s event kept that cadence while adding a notably different form factor to the lineup. Investors will now look to see whether the Duo can broaden Apple’s upgrade cycle in a maturing smartphone market.

Shares of Apple traded at $332.27, up 1.99% from the previous close of $325.80, giving the company a market capitalization of roughly $4.60 trillion. The stock’s positive move came as markets digested the announcements from the event.

For Apple, the stakes are significant. The iPhone remains the core of the company’s consumer electronics business, and a successful foldable could open a new premium tier. Whether consumers embrace the Duo at scale — and whether Apple’s refinement-first strategy can overcome the durability and price hurdles that have limited foldables elsewhere — remains an open question that will play out over the coming quarters.

What to watch

  • Early demand signals and shipping timelines for the iPhone Duo following the Sept. 9 announcement.
  • Apple’s upcoming quarterly earnings report, where management commentary on iPhone sales and product mix will be scrutinized.
  • Reviews and teardown reports addressing the Duo’s durability and hardware quality.
  • Competitive responses from Samsung and other foldable makers as the market expands.
