Two Paths Into Energy: Midstream vs. Upstream ETFs Take Center Stage

A new comparison of two energy-focused exchange-traded funds highlights a longstanding divide for investors in the sector: whether to back the infrastructure that transports oil and gas or the producers that extract it in the first place.

The Global X MLP & Energy Infrastructure ETF (NYSEMKT:MLPX) concentrates on midstream companies — the pipeline operators, storage firms, and terminal businesses that move hydrocarbons from production sites to refineries and export hubs. These businesses have historically been associated with fee-based revenue models and, in some cases, higher distribution yields, though results vary by fund and holding period.

By contrast, the State Street SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production ETF (NYSEMKT:XOP) offers broader exposure to upstream operators, the companies engaged in drilling and extraction. Upstream results tend to track commodity prices more directly, which can introduce greater volatility but also sharper swings in both directions when energy prices move.

Cost, Yield, and Concentration

The comparison, published by The Motley Fool, weighs the two funds across three dimensions: expense ratios, trailing dividend yields, and portfolio concentration. Midstream-focused vehicles like MLPX have often attracted income-oriented shareholders because of their distribution profiles, while equal-weighted upstream funds such as XOP distribute holdings across a wider roster of producers rather than concentrating in the largest names.

The release also references beta — a measure of price volatility relative to the S&P 500 — calculated from monthly returns over up to five years of fund history, alongside trailing 12-month total returns. Investors evaluating either fund are advised to note that yield figures reflect trailing-12-month distributions and may not predict future payouts.

Context Within the Broader ETF Market

Sector-specific ETFs remain a popular way to express views on energy without picking individual companies. The same structure has fueled growth elsewhere in thematic investing: for example, the Global X Robotics & Artificial Intelligence ETF (BOTZ), which recently traded at $35.28, up 0.23% from its previous close of $35.20, targets developed-market companies involved in robotics and AI development.

Technology names with exposure to digital advertising have seen choppier recent trading. The Trade Desk (NASDAQ:TTD) — a Communication Services company specializing in programmatic advertising across connected TV, display, audio, and native formats — was recently quoted at $14.43, down 4.5% from a prior close of $15.11, with a market capitalization of roughly $8.3 billion. That volatility underscores the divergence that sector and thematic fund structures are designed to address for investors seeking diversified exposure.

The energy funds themselves represent distinct risk profiles: MLPX’s infrastructure tilt versus XOP’s commodity-linked upstream exposure, each with different sensitivity to oil and gas price cycles.

What to watch

  • Upstream and midstream fund distributions, which may change with commodity price trends and pipeline cash flows.
  • Energy sector earnings season, typically a driver of upstream fund performance.
  • Future updates to the fund comparison as trailing return and yield figures refresh.
