NuScale Power Shares Jump 15% in Session Marked by Sector Enthusiasm

NuScale Power (NYSE: SMR), the Portland-based developer of small modular reactor technology, recorded one of its strongest single-session gains in months on Sept. 8, with shares climbing 15% without any company-specific announcement driving the move.

The rally trimmed NuScale’s year-to-date decline to roughly 21%, a notable recovery for a stock that has spent much of the year under pressure. The advance appeared to stem from broad enthusiasm across nuclear energy names tied to data center power demand and the wider artificial intelligence buildout, rather than any update from the company itself.

Small Reactors, Big AI Power Questions

NuScale is among the most closely watched companies in the small modular reactor (SMR) space. Its core product, the NuScale Power Module (NPM), is a light water nuclear reactor capable of generating 77 megawatts of electricity. The company also provides design work and nuclear regulatory licensing support for its technology.

The connection to AI infrastructure has become a recurring theme for nuclear developers. As hyperscale data center operators confront rising electricity demands, advanced nuclear has emerged as one candidate for long-term, carbon-free baseload power. That narrative has periodically lifted SMR developers’ share prices even in the absence of new contracts, regulatory milestones, or earnings news — as was the case with this week’s move.

Where the Stock Stands

Despite the one-day surge, NuScale shares remain well below where they started the year. In trading following the rally, the stock changed hands at $9.70, down 0.72% from its prior close of $9.77, valuing the company at approximately $2.98 billion. The company is classified in the industrials sector under specialty industrial machinery.

The volatility underscores the gap between sector sentiment and commercial execution that has characterized SMR developers broadly. Small modular reactor technology remains in early stages of deployment, and companies in the space have seen sharp price swings as investors weigh long-term nuclear demand scenarios against the pace of regulatory approvals and actual plant construction.

Whether recent momentum holds may depend less on headline-driven enthusiasm and more on tangible progress: customer agreements, licensing outcomes, and deployment timelines for NuScale’s reactor modules.

What to watch

  • NuScale’s upcoming quarterly earnings report and any updates on project timelines and customer commitments.
  • Regulatory developments from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission affecting SMR licensing.
  • Announcements of data center or utility partnerships involving NuScale’s technology.
  • Broader AI infrastructure spending news, which has influenced nuclear energy stock sentiment.
